8CN Ringside Report: Hopkins-Shumenov, Porter-Malignaggi

Hopkins UD Shumenov - Bernard "The Alien" Hopkins has yet again turned in a historic victory against former WBA Champion Beibut Shumenov at the age of 49. This bout, like so many others from Hopkins, was fought at his pace. The bout consisted of numerous jabs, feints, occasional right hand, and clinches.  In typical BHOP fashion, what you see in the first round is what you will get in the final round.  The highlight of the fight came in the 11th round as Bernard caught Beibut with an overhand right for a flash knockdown. With the victory, Hopkins's record improves to 55-6-2 32KOs and now holds the WBA/IBF light heavyweight titles as Shumenov's record drops to 14-2 9KOs.  Official judges' scorecards read 116-111 twice for Hopkins and a ridiculous 114-113 for Shumenov submitted by Guestavo Padilla. Tremendous victory for Bernard as he continues to defy father time but a real testament to his greatness would be if he participated in random blood/urine testing for possible PEDs.

Porter TKO4 Malignaggi - Undefeated IBF welterweight champion Shawn 'Showtime" Porter put on the fight of the night as he starched Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi inside of 4 rounds.  Porter dominated Malignaggi from the get go on activity and power, never permitting Paulie to get in rhythm.  The Magic Man was severely hurt in the 2nd round and demonstrated a lion's heart in escaping the round.  Porter dropped Paulie hard from a big right hand in the 4th round and followed it up with numerous punches that would send Paulie down for the second and final time as the referee did not even bother administering a count. Official time at stoppage was 1:14. With the win, Porter now stands at 24-0-1 15KOs while Malignaggi drops to 33-6 7KOs. Malignaggi was very classy in defeat and hinted at retirement during his post fight comments.

Quillin UD12 Konecny - Undefeated WBO middleweight champion Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin boxed his way to a unanimous decision victory over unheralded Lukas Konecny.  Despite being a 25 to 1 favorite over his challenger, Quillin was content on moving backwards, keeping his back against the ropes, and throwing few combinations for the duration of the bout.  Minimal exchanges between the two combatants brought numerous boos from the fans in attendance. Official scorecards read 120-108 and 119-109 twice.  Kid Chocolate improves his record to 31-0 22KOs while Konecny's professional ledger drops to 50-5 23KOs.  Note: Quillin felt the need to utilize the Mayweather shoulder-roll when in the pocket which ultimately negated his offense/power.
