ELB's Weigh In Friday - Chavez Vs. Fonfara

Boxing is on FIRE!!!!!!! And I love it. This Saturday April 18 on Showtime is the return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. After more than a year out of the ring due to promotional issues with his former promoter Top Rank, Chavez makes his return against Andrzej Fonfara. The fight will be fought at a catch weight of 172lbs.

Chavez is a star mainly due to his legendary father Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. However Chavez Jr. has proven to be a tough fighter when he decides to focus and get in shape. After fighting three times in 2012 including his first defeat at the hands of Sergio Martinez, Chavez has fought only once a year in 2013 and 2014 with both fights being against Brian Vera. Now Chavez is a promotional free agent and represented by the powerful advisor Al Haymon

Fonfara is a tough Polish fighter that gave Adonis Stevenson a close call last year in their fight. Now Fonfara has another major opportunity in his fight against Chavez. This is a fight that can put Fonfara back in line for a big money fight and possibly a title fight. Rumors had spread of a possible rematch between Fonfara and Stevenson and with a win that fight is still possible.

What Can We Expect In This Fight?

This fight is more about Chavez than it is about Fonfara. Chavez is the star and the reason people are going to watch this fight. It is up to Fonfara to take this opportunity to make himself known. After more than a year out of the ring as well as being known to balloon out of shape, the question marks surround Chavez. The number one question is if Chavez will even make the catchweight of 172lbs. Chavez is now training with Joe Goossen, but another question is how focused is Chavez especially after the long layoff. When focused and in shape, Chavez has a strong jab and heavy punches. He is aggressive and can work the body very well. Known for having a solid chin, but the question is how will Chavez do with a fighter that is his size? Chavez’s success has come at 160 with him being much larger than his opponents on fight night. In this fight the physical advantages are on Fonfara’s side.

Fonfara has a one and a half inch height advantage as well as a three inch reach advantage. He is not coming to lay down or to just be an opponent. Fonfara has a strong jab and somewhat deceiving quickness and power. He has also been the more active fighter which could play an advantage for him against the inactive Chavez. Fonfara will have to use his jab and reach advantage to keep Chavez moving and guessing. He cannot afford to slow down or be still because Chavez can bang.

This fight should be entertaining and I expect some good exchanges. Fonfara will definitely have some success landing on Chavez who tends to get lazy with his jab and walks in open at times.  The crazy thing is Fonfara tends to leave himself open which will lead to some exciting exchanges. This fight will come down to who jabs better and who defends better. Power punches will be a factor, but creating the openings with the jab will be the key. With that said I expect Chavez Jr. to win by UD. Chavez is the better stronger fighter and although Fonfara will make the fight tough he will come up short.
