Anthony Joshua: New Breed of Heavyweight

By John G.

On Saturday May 30, Anthony Joshua improved his record to 13-0 (13 KOs) as he dismantled savvy veteran Kevin Johnson (29-6-1) in a brief two-round contest.  Up until that point, Kevin Johnson had never been stopped.  Kevin Johnson had faced notable names such as Vitali Klitschko, Tyson Fury, Dereck Chisora, and Manuel Charr.  Johnson was widely regarded as a stern test for Joshua prior to the fight. It turns out that we are still waiting for that test after Saturday's matchup.

Joshua's speed and footwork proved to be too much for the veteran as his relentless attack eventually wore Johnson down early in the second round.  What was most impressive about Joshua's performance was his combination of size, speed, skills, footwork, and willingness to go for the kill.  Anthony Joshua has the skill set and coordination of a welterweight standing 6'6 with an 82-inch reach.  Joshua will be problem for any of the top heavyweights to come.

Anthony Joshua's next scheduled fight is
July 18 at the Manchester Arena against an opponent to be announced.  For those dying to see the heavyweight division come back to life, I'd suggest that you find a way to watch this young's journey to stardom.  Anthony Joshua has the skill set to be great for a long time, but does he have the will? The only way to find out is to tune in!
