Mares defeats Moreno in Los Angeles

The undefeated Mexican Abner Mares gave Anselmo Moreno trouble in the ring at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on Saturday night as he successfully defended his WBC title with a unanimous decision victory.

Mares (25-0-1) showed nonstop action as he fought and pressured his opponent. In the fifth round, Moreno (33-2-1) was knocked down for the first time in his boxing career.

Mares said "I could tell he felt my power and my aggression, he did take advantage of me when I waited too long, but he's a super champion and he gave me hell. I couldn't let him get comfortable with his style, because he's very good. I made it my fight tonight."

With Mares being a constant puncher, Moreno found it difficult to digest his punches. Moreno was staggered in the fifth round with three punch combinations. Mares admitted he was shocked when he saw his opponent going down and was not fully aware that his punch was so powerful.

Moreno the number one ranked bantamweight anticipated that he would overwhelm Mares, however the Panamanian lost for the first time in a decade and was not happy with the unanimous decision scores of 116-110, 120-106 and 116-110. He stated “The fight should of been closer. I’m unhappy that one judge didn’t give me at least one round, I was careless when I went down, but it was a great fight for the people.”

Mares spoke ambitiously after his win and said that he would target Nonito Donaire, stating, “I want to fight Nonito Donaire, that’s the only guy to fight, I think it’s up to Top Rank, because our side is willing and Oscar will walk to Vegas and on knock on Bob Arum’s door, let’s hope he wants it.”
