8CN Q&A with the new Canadian Welterweight Champion Frank Cotroni Jr.

This past weekend, Mascouche, Quebec’s favorite son Frank Cotroni Jr. ventured from the friendly confines of Montreal to face Edmonton’s Rory Coveney for the NBA Canadian Welterweight title in Moncton, New Brunswick. The 28 year old “Hitman” Cotroni went in with high expectations and impressed with a 10 round unanimous decision victory by scores of 99-91, 91-91.and 97-93 to take the belt back to Quebec.

8CN’s Darren Barcomb caught up with Cotroni (7-1, 4 KO’s) as he arrived back in Quebec to get his views on the big win and what the future holds for him:

Barcomb: You beat Rory Coveney this past weekend and took home the Canadian NBA title. How does it feel to wear the belt?

Cotroni: I feel like I just realized my dream…I feel great.

Barcomb: You had to venture to New Brunswick for the win. How did the crowd greet you? Was it different fighting away from Montreal?

Cotroni: Yes it was different. I was hoping I would fight at home since he’s from the west of Canada an I’m from the east, but it was a neutral crowd… not that many cheers were for or him.

Barcomb: You also went 10 rounds in the longest fight of your career. Tell me about the fight, what worked for you and why?

Cotroni: I under estimated my energy…. I still had some left at the end, so next time I’ll push more.

Barcomb: So, what’s next for you? Everyone wants to fight the champ, but who’s on your radar?

Cotroni: Probably Stuart McLelland, he’s challenged me.

Barcomb: Any shout out to friends, family, or sponsors?

Cotroni: I’d like to say thank you to my gym and trainer and everybody that I train with at the Club de boxe Éric Huard in Mascouche (Éric Huard, Richard Blouin) and my sparring partners Mikael Vandez, Jan Mikael Poulin, Withney, Dany Caron and Kenny Chery. Also, all my family and friends and 8countnews.
