Amir Khan vs. Julio Diaz -Could Be The Last Time


Expectations are high from the viewpoint of Amir Khan as this fight is the step up to the road to regaining his world titles and being back on the forefront of boxing.  The building blocks towards his career have been strengthened by Virgil Hunter; this will be his second fight that he has been under his tutelage.

The former world light welterweight champion will be facing Julio Diaz from Mexico this Saturday night 27th April at the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena as “Return Of The King” and this is his first UK fight for two years.  He’s lost his WBA and IBF titles to Lamont Peterson and then beaten by Danny Garcia, however he did play his cards better when he stopped Carlos Molina last December.  

He told BBC Asian Network, “It’s good to fight back in England, this could be the last time I ever fight here, even though I’m taking a pay cut, I’m coming back for my home fans.”

Diaz who is 33 a former two-time lightweight world champion and has 40 wins which include 29 knockouts on a 48 fight record. Khan thanked Diaz for coming to the UK and that he also showed courage to come as a underdog where he is not well known, that’s in the UK amongst all of Khan’s fans, Diaz has moved down in weight to fight Khan in the 143lb’s “catch “weight.

Also on the bill is Khan’s younger brother Haroon Khan who is 21 years of age and also an ex-Olympian and he will make his professional debut under “SuperFight Promotions” and is going to face Stefan Slavchev from Bulgaria.

Another fighter who has flown across the pond is “Bronze Bomber” Deontay Wilder who will be in the contest of the heavyweight bout against British Heavyweight champion Audley Harrison.

Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ogogo also will make his debut in the professional setting against Telford’s middleweight Kieron Gray in a six-rounder.
