Wladimir Klitschko’s KO of Pianeta just another in a long line of dominance

The boxing world was abuzz this weekend about Floyd Mayweather’s decision over Robert Guerrero in Las Vegas, but across the globe at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany, heavyweight kingpin Wladimir Klitschko (60-3, 51 KOs) had an even more eventful night as he defended his WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO titles with a 6th round KO of Italian Francesco Pianeta (28-1-1, 15 KOs).

The 37 year old “Dr. Steelhammer? Klitshchko took control from the onset, then laid the previously unbeaten Pianeta onto the mat in the 4th, 5th, and for a final time in the 6th round. The victory is the 18th straight for the Ukrainian giant as he continued an unbeaten streak that is approaching a decade.

Doubters always point to the alleged weakness of the heavyweight division, but the fact is that Klitschko has faced all the top competition, has ducked no-one, and has continually dominated all comers. The boxing community, particularly is the U.S., has become so accustomed to Klitschko victory that it doesn’t take the time to savor the exhibition put on by the long running champ.

So, Mayweather may be getting all the attention this weekend, but there is no one more dominant than Wladimir Klitschko, and once again a completely dominant performance is overlooked simply because of the ease in which it was obtained. Brilliance, sheer brilliance….
