8CN Exclusive: Wayne Barrett on fighting at GLORY 9

8CN’s Darren Barcomb caught up with Queens Native Wayne Barrett (1-0, 1 KO) as he prepares for his middleweight kickboxing matchup with France’s Mike Lemaire (9-0, 3 KO’s) at GLORY 9 on June 22nd at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, N.Y.

The 27 year old Barrett impressed in his pro-debut back in February with a first round knockout of Strahinja Ivanovi, and is eager to return to action. Read on below as Barrett speaks of his upcoming bout, his training, and what motivates him as a fighter.

Barcomb: Tell me a little about your training camp. Who are you working with and what are you focusing on?

Barrett: My training camp is going really well. I just got back from Atlanta where I worked with some really good guys, Brian Stann from the UFC, Douglas Lima from Bellator, and Clint Hester from New York City. In NY, I’ve got some really good training partners at Gracie’s like Jarrell “Big Baby? Miller. I’ve been focusing on coming forward, going to work early tempo. We’re anticipating a really hard fight, especially in the beginning. We want to make sure we don’t get overwhelmed early and push him back.

Barcomb: Tell me about your amateur background.

Barrett: I started training in Muay Thai around 2004, but I didn’t fight until the end of 2005 or beginning of 2006, and I’ve been fighting ever since. I was a Golden Gloves champ in Georgia.

Barcomb: You made your pro debut back in February. How did it feel to get that first big victory?

Barrett: After the victory, I got to reflect on what had just happened. It was always my dream to be a professional fighter and every time I look at my hands I get that eerie felling like that’s how I have to make my money. I felt good, like it was a stepping stone and an accomplishment. To win that first pro fight mentally helped me to zone in decide that yea this is what I want to do.

Barcomb: How does it fell to be able to show your skills on your home turf of NY City?

Barrett: A fight is a fight. I’d love to be in Italy or somewhere else, but I’m just thankful. My life is playing out as a fighter right now…..I’m in my second pro fight and to be a part of a GLORY show…. I’m thankful for the opportunity whether it be in New York or another country. I’m just here to do my job, and to establish myself. I want to show people that I belong on the higher scale of these shows.

Barcomb: What keeps you busy when you’re not training or fighting?

Barrett: Training takes up most of my time. I went back to school online for Global Business Management. So when I’m not training, I’m catching up with homework. I spend time with my kids, and I’m like everyone else…I like video games and playing basketball. But, I’m in the gym most of my day.

Barcomb: Any last words or shout outs?

Barrett: I want to fight for the people out there who want to be in the ring, but are hesitant or don’t think they have the skills. I fight to show them that they can believe in their dreams and once you start chasing the dream, all the parts will fall into place.
