Jennings Wins Tough Bout, Kovalev Wins With Ease

NBC Fight Night was a mixture of upsets, quick TKO's, and hard-fought battles.

Sergey Kovalev made short work of a game Cornelius White, beasting his way through "The Beast" in three rounds of punishing, pin-point accurate power shots that had White off balance and out of his game plan from the opening bell. Kovalev stalked White across the ring giving the Texan little chance to get set for his punches.

A game White in the first round appeared to be able to weather the Russian storm but it was apparent quickly in the second that he had no answer for the constant angles and combinations that were thrown his way.

In the third White suffered three knockdowns before the referee waved the fight off at 1:42 of the round.

Cornelius White never seemed a confident fighter even in the pre-fight interviews. White landed 6 power shots in the fight compared to 74 by Sergey.

With the Hopkins fight now cancelled due to visa issue with Murat, Kovalev may be an opponent of interest for a mandatory defense in the fall.

In the main event, Bryant Jennings won a hard fought victory on a swollen eye of his opponent Andrey Fedosov, improving to 17-0 with 9 ko's. Fedosov who was ahead on my scorecard before the ringside doctor recommended the stoppage suffered a cut and closing of his eye in the 5th round. Working on the inside and walking through the heaviest shots of Jennings, Andrey was quick and lethal with his body attack on the inside while giving up the outside range to Jennings. Jennings caught Fedosov with a punishing uppercut early in the fight, staggering him, yet Fedosov fought his way back often landing body shots and combinations to the head of Jennings who found himself often on the ropes.

Jennings hand speed became more apparent in the 6th round, landing more often though falling to stop Fedosov from advancing to the inside connecting with his own shots. As fate would have it the swollen eye made the diffence in the ending of the fight, as the Steve Smolger stops the contest between the 6th and 7th round.

Early results included an upset of Roland Cruz by Ray Narh, who improves to 26-2 with 21ko's. Cruz was never in the fight from the first bell and appeared to be waiting for the rust to show on Narh who had not fought in 25 months. Narh on the other hand displayed that he had been in the gym often in that two years as he threw over 700 punches in the fight. While Cruz waited, Narh landed often, with good punches in combinations.

Scores at the end of ten rounds were 96-94, 98-92, and a more reasonable 100-90.

Arturo Trujillo, of Easton PA, made his professional debut in the swing bout, banging out Anthony Watson in 29 seconds of the first round. Trujillo the former National Golden Glove Champion threw a mean straight left that Watson apparently wasn't prepared for from Arturo. Seemed someone forgot to tell Watson that Arturo was a southpaw, as Watson covered the wrong side of his mug when the punch was thrown.

On Espn Friday Night Fights, Jorge Diaz suffered a 4th round TKO when Yenifel Vincente (25-1-2 17ko) landed a hugeright hand that sat Diaz on the canvas  hard. Diaz made it to his feet but Vincente closed the show with a series of combinations and the referee stopped the contest. Diaz falls to 17-2.

In the Main Event, the big battle of the Bantamweights turned surprising as Juan Carlos Payano (14-0, 8KOs) survived a cut and a knockdown in the third round to stop Jundy Maraon (15-1-1, 12KOs) in the seventh .
