Anderson Silva breaks leg and earns chump change for his troubles

Silva1

Many would say that Anderson Silva is the greatest UFC world champion that's ever lived. He was at the top of his game and on top of the world for several years. Anyone that talks about UFC fighting will sooner than later talk about Anderson Silva. The man generates a lot of money for the UFC. So if he is the biggest name in the UFC and if he brings millions of dollars to the UFC, why is it that he was only paid 600 thousand dollars for his title fight this past Saturday? Floyd Mayweather Jr, the man on top of the boxing world would scoff at such an insulting purse. Floyd probably spends 600 thousand in a month's time just in recreation. Perhaps that's a little exaggeration, but you get my point.

A person that's risen to Silva's legendary status shouldn't be paid in thousands of dollars. Let's be real. Fair market value should put this guy in the multiple of millions range. A legend, a recent world champion, in a huge rematch on a PPV card?

The current champ Chris Weidman was paid 400,000 dollars for his title defense. That's not as pathetic of a purse considering he's just starting to make his mark in the sport. Silva on the other hand? He's cemented in the hall of fame, and he's reigned as world champion for several years. How does he not get more money than 600 thousand bucks?

It would be interesting to know what the PPV numbers were for the fight. I'm guessing that it had a lot of PPV buys considering how deep the card was. The intrigue of the rematch between Silva and Weidman, then mix in the heated clash between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate? I guarantee this fight generated millions of dollars.

Chris Leben reportedly earned 51 thousand for his fight Vs. Uriah Hall. This purse isn't too bad considering Leben hasn't held a title. It's the main event purse amounts that I take issue with. Main event PPV cards in the UFC generate millions and millions of dollars. For a legendary future hall of fame warrior like Anderson Silva to only get a 600 thousand dollar payday considering what he generates in revenue is pathetic.

If Dana White doesn't want his organization to start revolting, he probably needs to think about paying his fighters better. When you don't pay your people fair market value sooner or later things start to happen. In baseball, the players have a union that reps them. Football players have agents and lawyers, and that goes for baseball as well. Is the UFC next? Dana probably needs to hire someone just to keep an eye on Al Haymon 24/7 going forward.

Disclaimer - Silva earned 600 thousand for fight night, plus PPV percentages, and sponsors. That said, that's not even close to being paid fair market value.
