Omar Henry vs Ishe Smith?? Maybe, Maybe Not

Earlier in the week, there were rumblings that a contract  was in place for a huge bout at 154 lbs. between Omar Henry and Ishe Smith. According to the Smith camp, the contract was agreed upon by both parties and the fight would  take place on Showtime on November 16th. This is a fight that Smith has been waiting for and openly stated on Twitter that the fight was done. His camp, including Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, had signed off of the fight and it was done...that was Monday.

Thursday afternoon, there was no word coming from the camp of Omar Henry, leading to suspicions that Henry was backing out of the fight.  If you believe what you read,  it seemed that had indeed not agreed to fight Smith on the 16th of November.  This is a fight that would benefit both competitors, and with the winner would be looking at a possible title shot against one of the many belt holders who's name isn't Floyd Mayweather in early 2013. This of course infuriated Smith, who went to Twitter to vent out his frustrations with the man he calls “Fakemar Benry”, saying that because there was no word coming from the Henry camp, he was moving on and will now fight in December.

Fast forward 24 hours later, to Friday. The buzz still remained that Omar had backed out and that Ishe now had bigger plans in December with an opponent he called the biggest name since Randall Bailey some 8 years ago before Shay entered into the contender. Now, there was a huge buzz regarding who this opponent is. Right around the same time, Henry announced that he was facing Smith in November...setting off a bit of confusion into what was going on with these top two Junior Middleweights. Smith responded, saying Leonard (Ellerbe) told him he was fighting in December since the Henry's camp did not sign the contract. Henry responded, saying Ishe “b**** out”, all while not responding to the claims that Smith had made three days earlier. Of course, Smith claims that his camp was ready, while Henry didn't respond. Smith said anyone with knowledge of the sport knows he's not afraid of anything or anyone, especially Henry.

So here we are, back to square one, in a huge fight that will affect the most talented division in the sport. While each fighter has his followers and those who believe every word they say, one must question into why Omar Henry did not respond to Smith's claims that the fight was a done deal on Tuesday, rather than waiting on Friday to say anything about the fight. While the mystery remains regarding who actually backed out of the fight, we all agree, that this fight MUST happen and must happen this year. The future of the division is at stake with two of the most talented fighters in the division, and I'm sure after this fight, we'll all know who will be the 2013 breakout star in the Junior Middleweight division.
