Cigar Review: Flor de las Antillas

The story of Cigar Aficionado’s 2012 Cigar of the Year begins in Cuba, the island home of José “Pepin” Garcia, his son Jaime and daughter, Janny. Pepin began rolling cigars at the age of 11 in his hometown of Baez.
He rose to prominence in Cuba as a talented cigarmaker, but yearned for freedom and opportunity. One by one the Garcias left, eventually making their way to Miami where they began producing cigars.

I purchased this little gem of a cigar at Little Havana Tobacco inc in Anoka MN. It's a nice little quiet cigar shop and lounge. It's about 1 pm, and I am having a cup of coffee with some light peppermint creamer.

MADE BY: My Father Cigars S.A.
WRAPPER: Nicaragua
BINDER: Nicaragua
FILLER: Nicaragua
Shape: Toro

As I take the cigar out of its wrapper, I noticed it's a boxpressed cigar meaning the shape is more of a square shape with slightly rounded edges. I love boxed pressed cigars. It is wrapped extremely well and I don't show any holes or cigar leaf edges that tend to unravel as you smoke it.
This is a very well constructed cigar. The color is more of a darker brown, and the leaves have good veigning. It is slightly oily to the touch and feels a little leathery. It is firmly wrapped, but has a little bit of give when you press down on it.

Flavor/Taste & Aroma:

I used my trusty xicar cutter to clip the cigar and I proceed to light it with my dual flame torch lighter. It was well humidified and not dried out. It took 3 or 4 good passes to get the foot evenly toasted. It has a very smooth draw with a woody, nutty aroma and a very rich leathery taste. This is one exquisite cigar!
I love the woody, roasted undertones. Just delishious. Very mild spice in the first half of the cigar. I would categorize this as a medium to full flavored cigar. The flavor is very even and hasn't changed throughout the burn until the second half, closer to the nub.

Smoking Characteristics:

This cigar has a very nice smooth draw that burns evenly. I would say it is burning a little hot, with a white ash that will hold together for a short period of time, then it will fall off. I have set it down in the ash tray, went and got another cup of coffee and creamer and came back and was still lit.
I must say this is a very slow burning cigar. I'm already an hour into it and only burned half way. Then again, I have been interrupted a couple of times by customers and a good friend of mine. However, it is staying lit. The second half of the cigar was a little more on the stronger, very spicy/peppery notes.

Conclusion/Overall Impression:

After 2 hrs, I've finally finished this wonderful cigar. I am impressed! I can see why Cigar Afficionado rated it a 96. For the value, the burn time was good, didn't have any issues with needing to relight it. I would not hesitate to rate this 5 out of 5. Very good smoke! If you can find them, I would definitely try it out for a nice treat.

The Garcia's have really outdone themselves with this cigar. I would, however, as a suggestion, either drink water or a good glass of scotch to compliment the spiciness.
