The wait is now over as Jon Jones will officially defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Rashad Evans...

On a Saturday night on which the UFC hosted its 96th event that saw mega-MMA stars Rampage Jackson and Keith Jardine duke it out, Jackson, Mississippi locals gathered for a Psychout Promotions event at the brand new downtown Jackson Convention Center. For the 3,500 in attendance, there was no other event in the world they would have rather been at. The atmosphere was electric, the production was tight and the fighters were game. Psychout, which began as a small time project of several friends trying their hands at promoting an MMA show, has become one of the premier productions in the south.  The card featured 15 fights by up and coming amateurs as well as local area pros.

The main event saw former Mississippi State and NFL player; Wes “The Perfect StormShivers submit a smaller, but aggressive Jerry Carrol. The 6’7 265 pound Shivers was slated to face Forrest Griffin protégé, Scott Barrett, who had to withdraw two weeks prior to the fight after suffering a knee  injury in another event. Carrol took the fight on short notice which as admirable, but proved to be overmatched by the more experienced and much stronger Shivers. Other pro fights included Brian Albin, Shiver’s teammate, and his first round submission win over Darrel Wood. Chris Wright, yet another teammate, got his own massive KO victory at 28 seconds in the first round over Eddie Humphries, when he landed a crushing right hand that dropped Humphries to the mat.  Kelly Leo, of Madison Wrestling Club, won the Pyschout Welterweight title from its current holder and fan favorite, Babalu Goldbold, with a second round triangle choke.  Trey Brown, of Gracie South, stopped Lightweight title holder Tim Moore with strikes in the first round of their match. Brown who started the fight refusing to touch Moore’s gloves, made several more disrespectful motions toward Moore after his stoppage that drew strong boos from around the crowd voicing their disapproval despite his impressive win.  Lastly, Colby McMaham, of Dixon’s Dungeon submitted Hauley Tillman in the first round.

As much as the legions of MMA fans around the world love the huge productions put on by promotions such as the UFC, DREAM and Affliction, its local shows like these that truly show how far the sport has come.

Brandon  Marlbrough   wins (Submission) vs. Blake Hollingsworth
