Gabriel Gonzaga (13-6) excited a loyal Brazilian crowd at UFC 142 on Saturday night with a speedy 1st round rear naked choke submission of previously undefeated Ednaldo Oliveira (13-1-1).
The 32 year old Gonzaga made his first octagon appearance since an October of 2010 decision loss to Brendan Schaub and wasted little time delighting the crowd in Rio de Janeiro with a sample of the skills that once pitted him in a UFC heavyweight title matchup with Randy Couture.
Following back to back loses to Junior dos Santos and Schaub, Gonzaga found himself out of the UFC and pondering his career options. A submission victory over Parker Porter for Reality Fighting in October got him back on the right track though and he made the most of his new UFC opportunity.
Oliveira was originally scheduled to face Rob Broughton on the night, but an injury nixed that matchup, opening the door for Gonzaga’s return. With the loss, the 27 year old Oliveira tasted defeat for the first time in what was his octagon debut.
