With Georges St-Pierre out of the picture rehabbing his ACL, fight fans have been deprived of seeing the welterweight division’s best compete since his dominating win over Jake Shields back in April at UFC 129. Now rehabbing well, it looks like the champ may be back sooner than originally expected.
Last week 8CN spoke to GSP’s Montreal TriStar MMA trainer Firas Zahabi who sounded optimistic about the champ’s return. Zahabi stated “He (GSP) stopped by last week and was walking. Started rehab on his knee and is working with Gavin McMillan of sport science. He works with the NFL best and I feel optimistic about George’s recovery.”
With the welterweight division moving onward without GSP, Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit will battle for the Interim title at UFC 143 on February 4, 2012 in Las Vegas. GSP has let his fans know though that he plans to come back from his injury and battle the winner- and he has stated that he would rather it be Diaz. Nothing against Condit of course, but it seems that GSP has a substantial dislike of Diaz,
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight, UFC front man Dana White added “I have never seen Georges St. Pierre ... hate somebody. He hates Nick Diaz. I've never seen him hate somebody. I've never seen him so motivated to fight somebody, and to beat somebody as he is Nick Diaz.”
So, yes rehab is going well for GSP and he will be intently watching the upcoming UFC 143 main event with a keen eye, hoping Diaz does well so he can deliver a long awaited beat-down. If all goes well, expect the champ to return in late summer or fall to regain what is rightfully his; the top welterweight billing and the right to face the Strikeforce Champ Diaz.
