In November of 2008 I paid a visit to Palm Beach Boxing and Training Center to interview Undefeated Super Middlweight prospect Ibahiem King a week or so before his matchup with ( ). I paid my respects to King as he arrived in the gym and also happened to notice an particularly talkative individual engaging in conversation with King.
That individual, Jonathan Cepeda, was extremely confident, highly vocal, and a bit rough around the edges as he talked about the anticipation towards his pro debut with his friend King. One of the essential neccessaties to being a fighter is belief in one's skills and Cepeda wasn't lacking in that area.
Fast foward a week later and Cepeda was in the ring for the first time as a professional, staring eye to eye with Charles Wade in a Middleweight clash. Cepeda started slowly against Wade and I began taking notice to the Dominican's attributes as a fighter. While obviously eager to please the fans with a knockout, Cepeda was still extremely calm and patient as he sized Wade up.
The first round was slow early on but near the end of the stanza Cepeda let loose with a vicious left hook that completely changed the course of the fight. The punch cracked Wade on the jaw and left him helpless on the canvas, resulting in a first round knockout win for Cepeda. With such sheer force and brutality in just one shot, I decided it would be worth my time to keep an eye on Cepeda's progression as a fighter.
Less than two months later and just mere moments ago I was able to catch Cepeda live and in action again as he faced off with Marvin Blair in a Middlweight match up at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Cepeda was patient as usual but was never able to score the knockout, instead settling for a unanimous four round decision win. In the victory Cepeda showed patient aggression, a solid body attack, and, as always, was fierce as he attacked his foe. The ending result might not have been what Cepeda expected but he did score the win and moves his record to 3-0 with 2 knockouts.
Rugged as always, Jonathan Cepeda and his undefeated record will live to see another day.
