The welterweight division of boxing is loaded. The boxing world made an unexpected turn in light of Sugar’s recent victory, sweet. Could it be the resurrection of the Leonard-Hearns-Duran-Cuevas era. This time around we have Mosley-Mayweather-Cotto-Pacquiao. If Margarito recovers and turns out to be a “real” tornado after all, just imagine the merry-go-round match ups. I just drool over all the possibilities here.
And as what I love about boxing, one fight can turn everything upside down. Personally, as I was very disappointed by the Margarito loss and current fiasco (?), it will be nice to see a Mayweather- Pacquiao and Cotto-Mosley match up and the winner fighting each other and taking the title all the way to boxing immortality. If Mosley remains on top, what a befitting way to end a hall of fame career and a very amiable personality. If Mayweather come out on top, well, no one will dare call him Pretty Boy Chicken anymore. Cotto, on top is not far fetched, couldn’t wait to see how he does with Jennings then the possible Tornado rematch. But what I think will be the most fascinating, if the boxing Gods had their way, is a Mosley-Pacquiao match resulting in a Pacman welterweight king. Alright, alright, I admit, I have a little bit of leaning towards the PAC and all but please, please stay with me for a sec.
As inspiring Sugar Shane’s story is, you have to give this some thoughts; A 5 foot 6 inch, Tasmanian devil of a fighter, flyweight to welterweight-pacific storm, cigarette peddling rags to super riches story, god fearing, country loving savage fighter with a humility every mother will be proud of. If this story does not move you, if this tale does not in any way inspire you and look at the deep recesses of the humanity that is in boxing, I must say, look again my friend. I’m sure there were fighters before him who had taken a somewhat similar path, but this is 2009--- a year when boxing needs to stake its claim in its place in sports (an underdog vs. the commercial frills of most American sports, not only NFL), a year when there are economic hardships and unforeseen global economy hangs in the balance of poverty and desperation. In the age of BARACK OBAMA, the world needs a story like this and the boxing world is lucky to have a son like Emmanuel. He is no longer just a Filipino fighter who did well, he is as a matter of fact, Boxing’s gift to the world.
As mentioned, one fight can turn everything upside down. But take a pause, for a second, and imagine the possibilities.
