Undefeated middleweight prospect Edwin Rodriguez (9-0, 5 KO’s) formally signed a promotional contract with Dibella entertainment on Thursday, while also announcing that his next fight will be in his hometown of Worcester, MA on March 19th at Mechanics Hall.
“For me this is as significant as any Olympic signing that I think has been made recently. I view Edwin of that class of prospect and fighter.” said Lou Dibella, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Dibella Entertainment.
Edwin Rodriguez was equally as enthusiastic about the new partnership.
“I feel that he could take me were I want to go, which is being a world champion”
No opponent has been set for Rodriguez’s fight. An announcement is expected shortly.
The fight will be televised as part of Dibella Entertainment’s “Broadway Boxing” series that can be seen in over 30 million homes nationwide. However, the show has lacked a home in New England since it aired sporadically on the now defunct Fox Sports New England in 2006.
Rodriguez Manager Larry Army said that a deal with a local TV station may be worked out, perhaps with channel 3 in Worcester.
Although Dibella Entertainment promotes most of its “Broadway Boxing” shows in New York City, this could be the first of many fight cards Dibella promotes in New England.
“I really want to promote more in the New England area and I think Edwin and I are going to be doing a lot of shows in New England.”
That statement that is fine by Rodriguez.
“I’m really excited to be fighting home were all my family and friends will be supporting me”, said Rodriguez, who hasn’t fought in Worcester since competing in exhibitions as an amateur.
Pending success on March 19th, Dibella hopes to continue matching Rodriguez against better opposition and get him on national television, specifically mentioning Showtime’s Friday night prospect oriented series “Shobox”.
