Framingham, Massachusetts’ junior welterweight prospect Danny O’Connor (6-0, 2 KO’s) remained undefeated with a lopsided 4 round decision over St. Joseph, Missouri’s Travis Hartman (9-12-1, 7 KO’s) Saturday at the MGM Foxwoods Theater in Mashantucket, CT. O’Connor scored two knockdowns en route to the unanimous decision win. Official scores were 40-34 (three times).
“I felt great”, O’Connor said afterwards, “I was calm, relaxed, and not rushing. I feel that I’m turning into a good pro.”
He’s been transitioning from a standout amateur, a 2008 US Olympic alternate, to solid professional since turning pro in the fall of 2008.
O’Connor was well in control through the 1st round. In the second, he landed a powerful left hand that sent Hartman to the canvas. Hartman managed to make it to his feet and continue.
“I felt the punch connect and saw him go down. I was hoping he was done but he got up and the referee let him continue. He was a game fighter.” Said O’Connor.
The Framingham native remained on top of things in the 3rd round and scored another knockdown in the 4th, adding for a memorable ending where he almost knocked his opponent out with seconds remaining.
O’Connor promoters, Seminole Warriors Boxing, would like to move O’Connor along to a 6 round fight in his next bout and have him fight in front of his hometown fans in Massachusetts.
“We’re looking at doing something in Boston in June probably.” Said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminoles Warriors Boxing.
The fight with Hartman was part of the Carl Froch – Jermain Taylor undercard and there was a Massachusetts contingent in attendance loudly supporting O’Connor.
“My fans are great. They support me so much and travel. Connecticut felt like home tonight.” Said a smiling O’Connor.
