Light heavyweight Chad Dawson retained his title with a second consecutive lopsided win over former undisputed champ Antonio Tarver Saturday night at the Hard Rock Resort in Las Vegas. Official scores were 117-11 (twice) and 116-112. 8countnews.com scored the fight for Dawson 118-110.
Dawson was clearly quicker and would often beat Tarver to the punch. However, Tarver fought well in spurts and had his moments.
“I felt a little out of my element”, said Dawson following the bout, “Tarver did a good job of pressing me and took me off my game plan”.
Still – the 26 year old Dawson’s youth was far too much for the 40 year old former champ. The result similar to their first fight last year.
For Dawson, possible future fight’s include a light heavyweight showdown with former 2 division champ Bernard Hopkins or a rematch with former world champ Glen Johnson, whom Dawson decisioned in a close action packed fight in April of last year.
For Tarver, it could be the end of the road for him as an elite fighter. He’s lost lopsided decisions to the top two light heavyweight’s in the world – Chad Dawson (twice) and Bernard Hopkins in his last six fights.
Tarver is a two time light heavyweight world champion – knocking out the legendary Roy Jones to win the championship for the first time in 2004 and later winning it again with a decision victory over Glen Johnson in 2005. He also held another light heavyweight belt briefly in 2008, before losing it to Dawson.
