Capturing The Moment With David Martin Warr

May 14th, 2009

Chris Robinson

Hobbies are a peculiar thing. The term hobby is defined as an activity or interest pursued outside of one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure, but for some hobbies dig deeper and become something much more.

Growing up in Spain in the 1970’s, David Martin Warr always had a passion for photography and as a youth it became one of his main interests. His hobby of photography kept him occupied over the years and allowed him to hone his craft and discover just how truly passionate he was about his work.

Warr stuck with his love of photography and soon doors began opening for him. From his first portrait that he sold for cash to his current status as the personal photographer for Don King Productions, Warr has been able to parlay his talents behind the camera on to that of something unique and special.

As King’s primary photographer, Warr is always around the boisterous promoter, which has lead to much sightseeing around the world while also connecting with some of the boxing world’s most engaging characters at King’s events. What started out as an interest for Warr has spawned into something greater than he could have imagined and at the moment he is simply enjoying the ride.

8 Count News recently caught up with Warr and gathered his thoughts on his profession and everything it has brought to his life. From his childhood days in Spain, his venture to Amercia, his association with King, and much more, Warr opened up with great appreciation and respect for the life he lives today. In his own words, this is Capturing the Moment with David Martin Warr

Growing Into Something Else…

“I actually started selling pictures when I was about sixteen years old. It started out as a hobby for me and grew into something else. I just remember being like anybody else and taking pictures for my friends. One day when I was taking some pictures of a religious event in Spain back in my hometown, somebody from the studio recognized me and told me that I should sell my pictures. I ended up putting my pictures up for sale and I sold all of them. From that day forward I just started getting serious with my photography and things took off from there.”

American Life…

“I moved to America in 1995 and I noticed that the life was very different over here. I noticed that people here seems to work a lot more, as opposed to Spain, where every day is life a party. Of course people work over in Spain but you always find time for your friends and to enjoy yourself. That was the only main difference, but what I say all the time is that every country has good things and bad things. Spain has really good things but in America I was able to get a lot of opportunities that I didn’t get while in Spain.”

Connecting with Don King…

“Don King Productions put out an ad in the internet in 2003 and I went to the ad. I went through about three or four interviews and after that I did a freelance job for them. Don liked the job that I did and he offered me the opportunity to work full time and ever since then, that has been keeping me busy. I shoot all aspects of Don, his life, and also focus a lot of my attention to his team of fighters. I wish I could have room for other photo interests and I have a lot of people asking me to do different things but working for Don King is a 24/7 job. There are times when I am so busy that I rarely have time to sleep.”

Establishing Relationships…

“I love boxing. After all these years I have become friends with a lot of the fighters. They are true friends and I have established a lot of great relationships along the way. Guys like Francisco Palacios and Nate Campbell are good friends to me and I get to see how they really are. Sometimes I become so comfortable with the people I am working with that I actually forget that it is a job because I enjoy it so much.”

Knowing Don King…

“Don King is the best and that is one of the first things I noticed about him when I started working for him. If you don’t really know the man then you can’t really have an idea of who he is. In person I have noticed that Don is a very intelligent person who has a great knowledge of history. He has treated me very well from the beginning and I have a great relationship with him. I travel all over the world with him and anywhere he goes I usually end up going.”

Across the World…

“I like Europe and always look forward to going over there. Anywhere in Europe I love and it is where I am from. Two years ago we went there about 10 or 15 times and I was able to go to Germany, which I really love. I also enjoy going to England and Poland. Everywhere is a new experience and there is always something new to see. I remember discovering a little city when I was in Croatia at the WBC convention. I liked it a lot. There is also nothing like covering an event in Las Vegas. Madison Square Garden is also a great experience and you get to see a different pride and love from people at the event. The best thing is knowing a lot of people. I am always meeting a lot of new people and always traveling around the world. I have been all over the world from China, Europe, and every country. I think Australia is the only country that I have yet to visit.”

Capturing The Moment…

“I think that if you love what you do you can succeed at anything. If you put your passion into something it will be guaranteed and you can’t go wrong. If you put 110% into something how can you go wrong? The best thing is to record that second that nobody else will be able to capture. That is the most rewarding things for a photographer, capturing that moment in time and making it last forever.”
