Manfredo Jr vs Danny Jacobs In The Works?

June 10th, 2009

Manfredo vs. Jabobs 8/22?

A source from inside the camp of Peter Manfredo Jr. tells 8countnews.com that negotiations are currently under way with Golden Boy Promotions for  Manfredo (32-6, 17 KO’s) to officially move back down to the middleweight division for an HBO Boxing After Dark televised fight against undefeated prospect Daniel Jabobs (16-0, 14 KO’s). The fight would take place on August 22nd in Houston and will be the co-feature for the Juan Diaz – Paulie Malignaggi junior welterweight fight.

Jacobs already has a fight scheduled for June 26th against George Walton in Arizona on ESPN. A loss in that fight could potentially derail the proposed Manfredo bout.

Jacobs, a native of Brooklyn, is widely considered one of the hottest prospects in boxing. He’s appeared on several major undercards since making his debut under the Floyd Mayweather – Ricky Hatton welterweight championship match in December 2007. However, Manfredo would represent a step up in competition level for Jabobs.

He’s also appeared on undercards to Oscar De La Hoya – Manny Pacquiao, Joe Calzaghe – Roy Jones Jr., and Bernard Hopkins – Kelly Pavlik. Jacobs has been featured on HBO Pay-Per-View broadcasts and ESPN.

Manfredo began his career as a middleweight in 2000. He began his career with a record of 24-2 before officially moving up to the 168 pound super middleweight weight class in 2006. That 24-2 run included taking the runner-up spot in the inaugural season of “The Contender” reality TV series boxing tournament.

As a super middleweight, Manfredo quickly knocked out former world title challenger Scott Pemberton and Rhode Island rival Joey Spina to set up a championship match with Joe Calzaghe. Calzaghe stopped Manfredo within three rounds in that bout in 2007.

Manfredo would lose a decision to former titlist Jeff Lacy and be stopped by fellow contender Sakio Bika within three rounds in other notable super middleweight fights, while easily defeating less skilled fighters such as Donny McCrary and Ted Muller.

He last fought in April in Canada; spectacularly knocking out the Canadian based Walid Smitchet. He weighed in for the fight at 166 pounds and expressed a desire to move back down to the middleweight division were he felt he would be more effective.
