Fight Results from Twin River

September 6th, 2009

Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment and Sports hosted a show at the Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island on September 4th. Headlining the event was "Irish" Joey McCreedy (11-2-1, 6 KOs) of Lowell, Massachusetts and fellow Merrimack Valley resident, Eddie Caminero (5-3, 5 KOs). The bout lasted only one round. At the opening bell, Caminero seemed to be in better control of the action, dispensing a few good body shots. By the time the two minute mark had elapsed however, the momentum had shifted dramatically, with Caminero being caught by two big, right hands. Caminero was visibly staggered when the referee stepped in at 2:42 into the round. After the win, McCreedy seized the microphone and proceeded to announce his challenge to Elvin Ayala, who was on hand for the action. Ayala immediately and enthusiastically accepted his challenge. McCreedy added the vacant New England belt to his EBA super middleweight title.

2008 U.S. Olympian, Demetrius Andrade (6-0, 5 KOs) of Providence took on North Carolina's John Williams (3-1-1, 2 KOs) in a six round junior middleweight bout. Andrade was the more effective of the two from the opening bell on. In round two, Andrade doled out a beating, though Williams proved resilient enough to stand through it. By round three, Williams was collecting himself in order to avoid Andrade's onslaught of punches, though he was still getting tagged by his jab. Round five saw Williams spending some time backed against the ropes, at one point enabling Andrade to unleash an extended combination of good, solid punches. The bell sounded, saving Williams for one last round. In the final round, Williams continued to endure punishment, until the referee decided to call the fight at 2:33 into the round. Andrade retained his unbeaten professional record.

In a four round super featherweight bout, Omar Pena (2-1-1, 0 KOs) of Providence took on New York's Israel Suarez (2-2, 0 KOs). Pena's style of leading with his head was constantly inviting a head butt, but remarkably one never occurred. He was wide open while throwing his shots, which provided Suarez with easy opportunities to counter. Pena's lunging punches left him off balance and awkward, leaving Suarez to look comparatively smoother. Pena often appeared busier, but it was the punches of Suarez that were the more effective. A point deduction against Pena in round three for hitting behind the head did nothing to help him on the cards. Suarez won a unanimous decision, with two scores of 40-34 and one of 38-36.

Cruiserweights Jay Holland (3-2-1, 2 KOs) and Rodricka Ray (2-3-1, 1 KO) fought to a draw in a four round match. Holland of Providence began round one by feeling Ray, of Jackson, Tennessee, out with his jab. Both fighters were composed and evenly paced. In round two, Holland threw a combination that impressed the crowd, but failed to land flush against his opponent. In round three, Ray's punch output was lagging, until he redeemed himself by throwing a good left hand. In round four, it was Holland who was throwing the good lefts. By the final round, both fighters were punching and connecting, leaving all three judges to score the bout 38-38.

A four round junior middleweight bout took place between Hartford, Connecticut's David Bauza (1-0, 1KO) and Brockton Massachusetts' Antonio Fernandez (0-3). Both fighters were active throughout the rounds, but Bauza seemed to be the quicker and more accurate of the two. At 2:38 into the fourth round, the referee stepped in to stop the fight. At the point at which the action was halted, the reason for the stoppage was not clearly visible. Fernandez was not doing much to fight back, but he also did not appear to be in any obvious trouble. The crowd reacted negatively to the referee's decision, but the win marked David Bauza's first in his professional debut.

In the final four rounder of the night, super middleweights Sam Norwood (0-5) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Vladine Biosse (3-0, 3 KOs) of Providence, lasted only two rounds together. Norwood revealed a dangerously penetrable defense that allowed Biosse to connect almost at will. The fight ended with the second round TKO of Norwood. The hometown fighter, Biosse, was able to retain his unbeaten record.
