The popularity of the heavyweight division has gradually faded away. Currently there is a serge of excitement, surrounding the upcoming bout September 26 between heavyweights Vitali Klitschko and Chris Arreola. Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola will attempt to become the first boxer of Mexican descent to win a World Heavyweight title. Making history will give his fans more to celebrate this month, other than Mexican Independence Day. The California native Arreola was not Klitschko's first choice. Vitali was originally slated to face Londoner David Haye. Haye turned down the offer, deciding to face Nikolay Valuev in November instead. This opened the door for a title fight between Arreola and Klitschko at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Defeating the WBC Heavyweight champ wont come easy. Klitschko is 6ft 7in and 250 pounds of raw talent. Klitschko took on some big named fighters like Samuel Peter, and became noticed internationally after taking on Lennox Lewis. He may have lost to Lewis, but held his own and could've possibly won that fight.
Arreola has proven to be able to win against some strong heavyweights such as Travis Walker, Jameel McCline, and Chazz Witherspoon. Taking on a polished fighter like Klitschko is a different story. Arreola must work on several things including his footwork and defense. He gives too many openings which allows his opponents to take full advantage. The veteran Klitschko is highly dangerous when given those openings. Klitschko is much stronger and throws clean accurate jabs.
Arreola has some strong points. He can dominate his opponents when pressuring them especially against the ropes. He throws the most awkward looking punches, but they can sometimes be effective. Arreola has an opportunity of a lifetime to capture a win in his own backyard. American boxing needs someone to get excited about. I don't see this fight lasting very long. Arreola may be in over his head. Klitschko may not be the most dynamic fighter in boxing, but he will most likely be Arreola's nightmare and destroy his dreams of making heavyweight history.
