Mayweather destroys a determined Marquez

September 19th, 2009

Floyd Mayweather Jr destroyed a much smaller yet determined Juan Manuel Marquez.  Mayweather put Marquez down in the 2nd round with a beautiful left hook.  Marquez survived the round, and he survived the fight but that's all he was able to do.  Mayweather's speed and size, and skill were all too much for Marquez to handle.  The fight was completely dominated by Mayweather.  Floyd landed 59 percent of his power punches, and showed absolutely no ring rust in a very impressive win.  After the fight HBO's Max Kellerman asked Floyd Mayweather about a potential fight with Shane Mosley.  Floyd began to answer that question when Mosley walked up and challenged him face to face.  A heated exchange between the two began, with both guys having to be separated.  Kellerman pressed Mayweather on the weight issue, and the Mosley and Pacquiao's issues which seemed to irritate Mayweather even further.  It was an impressive win for Mayweather but it leaves more unanswered questions.  The official scores were 118/109 120/107 and 119/108  UD Mayweather

Chris John vs Rocky Juarez -  John UD

Undefeated WBA featherweight world champion Chris John retained his title by simply out boxing Rocky Juarez.  Juarez hurt Chris John at the end of the 12th round, but he didn't have enough clock to work with.  John controlled the majority of the fight by being more active.  Juarez once again was unable to get his punches off and seemed hesitant to pull the trigger.  John moves to (43-0-2D)  Official scores 114/113 119/109  and 117/111

Michael Katsidis vs Vincente Escobedo  - Katsidis SD

Austalian Michael Katsidis won a controversial split decision over Vincente Escobedo capturing the WBO interim title.  Katsidis applied aggressive pressure with each and every round.  Most of the rounds looked exactly the same with Katsidis coming forward, applying pressure, and getting the better of the exchanges.  Escobedo had a few moments in the fight, but they were few and far between.  Katsidis may have received a broken jaw late in the fight. The right side of his face swelled up considerably. The official scores were 116/112 Escobedo and 115/113 118/110 for Katsidis.

Lock vs Cruz

Cornelius Lock of Las Vegas, Nevada bounced back nicely with a 5th round knockout over Orlando Cruz.  Lock had Cruz down a few times in the fight using crisp punching, and well time punching.  Lock came up short in his last effort against Antonio Escalante, but bounced back nicely tonight with this knockout win.  Lock had Cruz down once in the 1st round, and again in the 5th round.  The official time was 2:08 of round 5.  With the win, Lock captures the NABO title.
