Tampa fight night recap

September 20th, 2009

Two of Tampa’s premier boxing promotions, One Punch Productions and Fight Factory joined forces for an exciting evening of boxing that featured 8 sensational bouts. On this special night, legendary matchmaker Johnny Bos put several of the Bay area’s top prospects in the biggest test of their careers. At the end of the night, 3 fighters who came into the ring with perfect records left with losses.

In the main event of the evening, journeyman Harvey Jolly silenced the crowd and snatched the “0” from local favorite Nick Iannuzzi’s perfect record with a brutal first round knockout. Iannuzzi was down three times in the round before the referee waived it off at 2:11. Jolly, who is much better than his record indicates, moved to 10-11-1 on his career while Iannuzzi fell to 12-1.

In the co main event of the evening, Raymond Charles, who was cornered by his manager Nate Campbell, put on a boxing clinic during his six round destruction over veteran Louie Lejia. Over the course of the fight, Charles mixed in body and head shots that seemed to land at will. Swelling under Lejia’s left eye became noticeable in round three. As both fighters exchanged in the center of the ring, Charles’ speed advantage became apparent. As the fight wore on Leija started breaking down. Even though he was hurt several times throughout the fight, the cagey vet didn’t go down until the 6th and final round. The bout was halted at the 0:31 mark of the round by referee Frank Gentile. Charles upped his record to 12-0-2 and will continue his rise up the welterweight rankings on November 6th.

The opening fight of the night saw the first upset of the evening as Anthony Rodriquez of Orlando lost his first career fight to Columbian journeyman Felipe Almanza by scores of 58-56 x 3. 8CN scored the fight the same 58-56 for Almanza. The step up in competition proved to be too much for Rodriquez, but he battled valiantly. Almanza, who has been in the ring with Cesar Ceda Jr., Eric Morel and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., moved his record to 16-15-4 with the win. Rodriquez fell to 8-1.

Crowd favorite Adam Jaco of Sarasota, Fl, who entered the ring with Motley Crue’s “Kick Start My Heart”, kick started the action from the beginning landing several flush shots to his opponent, Eric Clinton’s face. Clinton, who came into the contest 0-6-1 was a durable opponent but could not find the answers to slow Jaco down. Unexpectedly Clinton’s corner halted the action with just seconds left into the bout. The official result was Jaco TKO 2:42 of round 4. With the win, Jaco moves to 6-3-1, while Clinton remains winless.

Fight Factory’s own Manny Woods made his pro debut a successful one by winning a majority decision over Wilkey Campfort. Woods, the crowd favorite, came out of the corner blazing and flashing his amazing hand speed. However Campfort, who came into the fight undefeated, kept his composure and found several holes landing good shots on Woods. Woods superior speed prevailed as he beat Campfort to the punch during most exchanges. Campfort’s lack of body punching visibly upset his corner, but their pleads for body work were never answered by their fighter. Both men were shaken during the fight. 8CN scored the fight 39-37 Woods. Official scores were 39-37 x 2 and 38-38.

Heavyweight Lamar Davis used his size advantage to easily defeat Robert Turner in a 4 round heavyweight bout. Davis continually pumped his jab into the face of Turner, who was giving up nearly 5 inches in height. The high point of the fight happened early in the fight before any punches had been thrown. Turner, while circling the ring slipped out of the ring kicking Commissioner Tom Malloy’s computer. Occasionally Turner, who made his pro debut would slip under a jab and work the body of Davis before clinching. 8CN scored the fight a shutout for Davis, 40-36. Official scoring was 40-36 x 2 for Davis and a shocking 38-38 Draw. With the Majority Decision victory, Lamar Davis moves his record to 3-1.

In another upset of the night, Voodoo Management’s Kenneth Moody Jr. was knocked down twice in the first round by Richard Grant as the referee waived it off at 2:25 of the round. Moody, who was also cornered by Nate Campbell, came out strong pumping his jab, but got caught and never recovered. With the setback, Moody falls to 1-1 while Grant moves to 4-3.

In the fight of the night, Cordaro Simpkins battled toe to toe with Roger Sosa over 4 rounds. Neither fighter backed down during this slugfest, but at the end of the night Simpkins was the victor by scores of 40-36, 39-37 x 2. The fight was much closer than scorecards indicated. 8CN scored the fight 39-37 for Sosa, but could have easily have been a draw. Simpkins, also managed my Campbell, moved his record to 2-0.

With promoters Terry Trekas and Pete Fernandez putting aside their past differences, they have created an amazing experience for fight fans to see the best fighters in Tampa under the same banner. Together as one entity, the two can combine and create some of the best club fights around and revitalize the Central Florida boxing market. The turnout for the card was very strong and the crowd was loud and vibrant from beginning to end. Their next fight card will take place November 6th again at the Hyatt Regency.
