Money Mayweather continues to lose fans

October 30th, 2009

Bookmark and Share

There is no doubt Floyd "Money" Mayweather has a tremendous amount of talent and charisma. Although he is one of the most popular fighters in this sport. It seems as if his huge ego has pushed many of his boxing fans away. His persona of being "Money" Mayweather has overshadowed his skills as a talented fighter.

Not only is he losing fans with his arrogance. He continues to lose respect as a fighter. We all know that he has an unblemished 40-0 record. The opponents he has defeated Judah,De La Hoya,Hatton, and Marquez,to name a few are all good fighters in their own right.

The reality is Mayweather cherry picking opponents especially the smaller, older, slower ones he can handle with ease, gains him zero respect from the boxing community. Is he more concerned with maintaining his perfect record and making money than challenging top tier fighters?

Mayweather will continue to lose the respect of true boxing fans as long as he continues to evade real threats. The fight everyone has been waiting for Pacquiao vs. Mayweather this would be a true battle of kingship. In order to gain the fans respect you must face the elite.Right now Pacquiao is the elite.

I know that Mayweather's fans may disagree but its not about records its about respect in this sport. Does Mayweather really want to go down in history as an undefeated fighter that feared challenging the best of his era?

When Mayweather retired many boxing fans felt he was the pound for pound king. Many things have changed since he retired including the sergeancy of the boxing warrior Manny Pacquiao.Mayweather should have chosen a caliber fighter, like Pacquiao or Williams,as a come back fight.Choosing a fighter like Marquez for a comeback fight didn't help him reprise his role as the pound for pound king.

Hopefully Marquez was a warm up fight and he is awaiting the outcome of Pacquaio vs.Cotto.Maybe then he will make a decision and challenge Pacquiao.Especially if Pacquiao's fight against Cotto looks better than his fight with Marquez. It doesnt look immediately realistic that we will see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

Pacquiao has the respect of fans because he is fearless taking on dangerous opponents. No one is disputing Mayweather's skills as a boxer.Mayweather has so many weapons iron clad defense, incredible speed, and is an excellent counter puncher. He is one of the best in this sport, but he will continue to lose the dignity and respect of boxing fans if he refuses to put his skills to the test against the best.

What are you talking about? Floyd Money Mayweather is the best pound for pound king, he is better than pacman Pacqiuao.Mayweather never did catch weights, he moved up to the weight levels of Oscar de la hoya (154) Hatton (147,which hatton agreed) Jose Luiz Castillo (135), Baldimor (147) Zab judah, unlike pacman who fights every one in a dehydrated catch weight. He dehydrated Oscar, Cotto, Morales (the 2 and 3rd fight) and he fought the easiest light weight champion David Diaz, unlike Marquez who foght the top to lightweight kings, Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz

Cotto is a natural welterweight champion, while Pacquiao won the light welterweight belt easily against Hatton.Mayweather did really looks good in out pointing Marquez throughout the match.
The three fighters got an excellent resume, however Cotto keep his by rebuilding it thru bloodied fights and won.Pacquiao is constantly dismissed as too small and not on the same class, until slowly refuted those takes, by clearly winning in an exciting way,Knocking out bigger opponents.
Finally now ,just heard from an interview of Mayweather ,he beat an old fat man Marquez.
However the equation remains untouch,Big welterweight champion Cotto, small but knock out artist of big fighter foe Pp4 champion Pacquiao, and then the undefeated champion Mayweather jr. with a ? on his quality of opponents. If Pacquiao wins against Cotto, then the next best fight should be Mayweather Jr.,but he won't be there immediately if Manny wins i can almost see he will announce another cherry pick fight basing it on the 1 million ppv he made fighting Marquez. It is a go ahead for him because a lot of people are seeing his fight even not the popular opponent. So, i think it all come down of a repeat packaging and will not happen for a mega fight between him and Pacquiao.

Sabrina, Thank you for the reading. I don't belive I've read 1 of your articles before. I'm a nobody, I must agree with you. I recently got back into boxing. I'm from the Youngstown Ohio area. I haven't watched boxing since BOOM BOOM retired, then along came Kelly Pavlik. The first Kelly fight that I watched I heard the announcers say something about Manny Pacquiao, my wife (a Filipina from the Philippines) said Oh yeah, he is very good. So I paid to see his next fight. I'm so glad I did. I'm hooked on boxing now.
Between BOOM BOOM and Kelly, I really didn't watch boxing, but, you always hear about great fights and fighters. Without ever even seeing Floyd fight, I liked him. He is American and was getting alot of attention. Well, now that I've spent countless hours reading articles, watching interviews, and catching up (on YOUTUBE) on matches that I've missed over the years. I don't like Floyd, people say he's just after the money, well that's fine, that's why we all go to work and do our job, his ego and shoving his money in peoples face is a real turn off. I would love to see him and Manny go at it, regardless of the outcome of Nov 14, which I feel Manny will win. I feel and have said so since Floyd came out of retirement, that he will never fight Manny, due to money issues. Floyd wants the big purse no matter who he fights, he deserved it with Marquez, it was his comeback fight. But now, Floyd don't have the bargin power he thinks he has, he needs to RE-earn the right for the big purse. He needs to fight a top contender. I wish someone would interview him on camera and ask a simple question. Floyd, you feel you can beat Pacquiao, would you fight Pacquio at a 60/40 split of everything, PPV, gate, whatever makes the money? If Floyd says no, he needs a bigger purse, ask him what that purse is, and then ask him if he would sign for that purse, but, the winner wins the big purse, and the loser takes the smaller one? I don't think the fight will ever happen.

Regardless of PBF losing fans, they will watch his fights. They will watch him lose a fight. It's still money for him.

Tails Is discussing this article

Even if Pacman loses against Mayweather, Pacman will always have my respect as a boxer. He's never ducked a real fight and is willing to constantly challenge himself. A great fighter doesn't have to have an unbeaten record. A fighter is great because he overcomes challenges by fighting fighters who are considered dangerous in his era. And if he loses, he faces the lost, learns from it and comes back to fight another day.

Mayweather has plenty of money if he hasn't wasted it all. It's time to man up and fight for a legacy worth remembering. If he doesn't quit this legacies/reputation/respect don't pay bills crap, he's gonna find out that he's going to be a forgotten fighter when he gets older. It's time for him to face Pacquiao, Cotto, Mosely, and/or Williams. If he does that, then he'll earn our respect. And I'm sure he'll make a bit of money too.

VERY WELL SAID ... TOTALLY AGREE...

BSN Is discussing this article

I can't even believe there are still people who idolizes Floyd...
He doesn't want to fight Mosely because Mosely got many losses and will not generate good PPV buys... I say its all excuses... How was JMM any better that Mosely to get picked up for that matter ? Ofcourse JMM got way less chance of beating him, and this is Floyd's best defense -- and it is seen outside the ring, NOT inside.

I agree wid u. He is maybe the best skilled fighter but he is a coward.

I've nothing more to say but to agree with you Sabrina. Money May should prove that he's ain't afraid to trade leather with Pacman or many would think that he's really cherry picking his opponents.

Donman Is discussing this article

Mayweather in his prime will not fight anyone who remotely comes close to beating him... he will cherry pick an opponent he can easily beat .. perhaps he should go up against Camacho Sr., Yori Boy Campas, Ivan Calderon, Edwin Valero, Nonito Donaire and the like. Fighters who are either too old or too small to beat him... He will go down as another Roy Jones Jr who is very skillful but doesn't have the testicles to mix it up with the top fighters in his weight class.. When Mayweather is washed up and broke (believe me he will be broke sooner or later), he will fight the top fighters to make money only to get his ass whooped, again like Roy Jones Jr who got knocked out twice and schooled by some Welsh fighter..
