Otis Griffin & Danny O’Connor win in Lincoln

November 21st, 2009

In the main event, “The Next Great Champ” winner Otis Griffin (21-6-2, 8 KO’s) pounded out a unanimous decision over New England favorite “Irish” Joey McCreedy (11-4-1, 6 KO’s). Official scores were 78-75, 77-76, and 78-74. 8countnews.com scored the fight for Griffin 78-74.

I didn’t want it to go to the scorecards”, said Griffin following the fight, “but (McCreedy) has one of those tough Irish concrete chins.”

After a close 1st round, Griffin began to land his left hook with more regularity and power in the 2nd. In the 3rd, he used the left hook to wobble McCreedy towards the end of the round. In the 4th and 5th he continued to land the more effective and more obvious punches.

In the 6th Griffin rocked McCreedy with a huge right uppercut that snapped his head back and sent his mouthpiece flying out of his mouth. McCreedy stayed upright by clinching. Griffin was warned for punching McCreedy while he was holding and after referee Joe Lupino told them to break.

McCreedy bounced back in the 7th having his best round outworking Griffin in close with body punches and seemed to have more steam in the final round.

After the fight, Griffin looked ahead to a possible fight with ringside observer Joey Spina, another New England native.

We’ve got something in the works. Hopefully it’ll get done.”

In the evenings co-feature, former Olympic alternate Danny O’Connor (10-0, 3 KO’s) gave his fans who traveled from nearby Framingham, MA plenty to cheer about as he won a shutout unanimous decision over James Hope (4-3, 4 KO’s) in a 6 round junior welterweight fight. All 3 judges scored the fight 60-54. 8countnews.com scored the fight 60-53, giving O’Connor a 10-8 round in the 4th despite not scoring a knockdown.

We came in with a game plan and I did my best to follow it”, O’Connor said as he addressed the crowd after the fight on the public address system.

If his game plan was to land frequently and to be barely scratched himself, he followed the plan to a T."

In the opening round, O’Connor used his superior quickness and boxing skills to land clean head shots on the constantly pressuring Hope. In the 2nd frame, it was more of the same. At one point Hope held both arms at his side willingly taking punches to the face in an attempt to show that the blows were not hurting him. However, he covered back up quickly.

He was a tough opponent”, O’Connor said after the fight."

In the 3rd blood started dripping from Hope’s nose as O’Connor continued beating him to the punch. The 4th was just a huge round for O’Connor. He was barely touched and his punch output only seemed to increase. In the 5th, Hope continued shaking his head and talking to O’Connor in the ring in an attempt to show that the punches he was taking were having no effect on him. The swelling on his face showed otherwise.

O’Connor has campaigned as a junior welterweight his entire pro career but plans on moving down a division to lightweight at some point.

On the undercard, returning hometown female junior welterweight Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (20-4-1, 7 KO’s), 8 months removed from having a baby, scored a unanimous decision over North Carolina’s Rachel Clark (4-3-1, 3 KO’s). Official scores were 60-54 from all three judges.

I feel unbelievable and want to thank everyone for coming out”, Clampitt told her home state fans following the fight."
