In the biggest fight in his young career, Wilfredo “WV2” Vazquez Jr. scored an exciting seventh round TKO over former world title challenger Genaro “Poblanito” Garcia to retain his WBO Latino Super Bantamweight title in the main event Friday night at the Kissimmee Civic Center. The crowd favorite, Vazquez Jr. controlled the action from the start by peppering away at Garcia with his jab. In the middle rounds, the fight turned into a slugfest, as the gritty Mexican warrior attempted to fight on the inside and bully Vazquez Jr. around the ring and steal the rounds on the scorecards. However, Vazquez Jr.’s speed and strength broke Garcia down and it was only a matter of time before the fight was going to finish. In the seventh, Vazquez Jr. scored his first knockdown of the fight with a barrage of right hooks and straight lefts to Garcia. Only moments later, after beating the count, Garcia was down again. Attempting to continue, Vazquez Jr. sealed the deal while landing several unanswered shots to Garcia, forcing the referee to stop the fight at 2:49 of the seventh round. The second generation Vazquez ups his record to 17(14)-0-1 and one step closer to a world title shot.
In the co feature of the evening, a six round light welterweight bout between prospects Javier Monserrate of Puerto Rico and Raul Tovar of Texas ended in a draw. Both fighters had their moments in the bout, but neither took control of the bout. Judges scored the fight 58-56 Monserrate, 58-56 Tovar and 57-57 Draw. Monserrate’s record moves to 11-1-2 while Tovar’s moves to 7-2-1.
The opening bout of the evening pitted two Florida journeymen Devarise Crayton of Orlando and Juan Aguirre of Jacksonville in a 4 round light welterweight contest. Throughout the fight, Aguirre was the faster and busier fighter. Crayton however had the power to rock Aguirre a few times throughout the fight, but failed to let his hands go enough. The fight went the distance with Aguirre taking the Unanimous Decision by scores 39-37,39-37,40-36. Aguirre moves to 4-3-1 in his career while Crayton falls to 6-8-2.
The second bout of the evening featured two time Olympian Sherali Dostiev of Tajikstan versus Puerto Rican Jonathan De Jesus in a 4 round super bantamweight contest. While De Jesus was the crowd favorite, he was no match for the amateur standout. Dostiev stayed calm and precisely popped his punches on the lanky De Jesus. In the second round Dostiev dropped De Jesus in the neutral corner with a straight left to the ribs near the bell. At the start of the third, Dostiev overwhelmed De Jesus forcing him to take a knee, which prompted De Jesus’ corner into stopping the fight. The Tajikstan Olympian, who turned pro last month, moves his record to 2-0, while De Jesus falls to 0-3.
In a battle between two seasoned journeymen, Forty-one fight veteran Jose Angel Roman scored a 4th round TKO over sixty-three fight veteran Alex Perez. The first two rounds saw back in forth action with Perez taking the first and Roman taking the second. Midway through the third round, Roman landed an excellent overhand right that dropped Perez. Showing poor sportsmanship however, Roman taunted Perez while down on the canvas, which broke the referees count giving Perez more time to recover. Perez could not recover from the knockdown and in the 4th round, while taking a barrage of punches, Perez took a knee causing his corner to stop the fight. A very emotional Roman excessively celebrated his victory, giving him his first win in two years and moving his record to 11-25-5. Perez, now a loser in twelve straight, falls to 23-27-4 in his twenty year career.
In a slug out between two pro debutants, David Hamby of Orlando, Fl scored knockdowns in rounds two and four to win a unanimous decision over Rafael Montalvo. Scores were 40-35, 39-35, and 38-36.
