Sacramento – Houston based heavyweight Nagy Aguilera (15-2, 10 KO’s) scored the biggest win of his career with a stunning 1st round TKO of former heavyweight titleholder Oleg Maskaev (36-7, 27 KO’s) after two knockdowns Friday night at Memorial Auditorium. The fight was broadcast live on www.NESportsTV.com and is still available to view on that website on demand.
Both fighters came out cautious. However, Aguilera was far more mobile and active as he moved from side to side and circled Maskaev throwing body punched. Maskaev seemed content stay still at the center of the ring and barely threw any punches, let alone landed anything of consequence.
Midway through the round Aguilera landed a left hook to the side of Maskaev’s head that left the former titlist noticeably wobbled. A follow up left hook put Maskaev to the canvas for the first time in the fight. He made it to his feet in time to beat the count but was clearly on unsteady legs.
When the referee waved both fighters in to engage once again, a follow up flurry from Aguilera put Maskaev down for the 2nd time and the referee immediately waved off the bout.
Prior to Friday night, Maskaev was ranked #2 in the world by the WBC and had a title eliminator set up with Ray Austin for the opportunity to challenge current WBC champion Vitali Klitschko. However, now it appears that that opportunity is lost and Maskaev’s days as an elite heavyweight are likely over.
