Johnson Beats Mack
February 6th, 2010
Former light heavyweight world champion Glen Johnson (50-13, 34 KO’s) made a step in the positive direction towards another crack at a world title belt by scoring three knockdowns en route to a 6th round TKO over Yusaf Mack (28-3-2, 17 KO’s) in a title eliminator.
“I think I’m it”, responded Johnson to a question fielded towards him about finding the fountain of youth. The 41 year old contender was 11 years older than his opponent and experience outgunned youth this time around.
Mack had good moments early on in the fight. However, in the sixth Johnson found his mark with an overhand right that dropped Mack a minute into the frame. Mack would make it to his feet, however would be dropped again by a straight right hand. Finally, a hooking shot that put Mack to a knee cause referee Frank Gentile to call a halt to the action.
With the win, Johnson becomes the mandatory challenger for beltholder Tavoris Cloud.
“It’s going to be an explosive fight and a fan favorite fight”, Johnson said of the forthcoming Cloud clash.
