8CN Interview with Darrel “King David” Madison

March 10th, 2010

Darrel “King David” Madison has become a staple in the New York state boxing scene. As the New York State heavyweight champion, Madison has beaten several notable fighters, such as Zuri Lawrence, Domonic Jenkins and WBC ranked Nagy Aguilera. Even though Madison spots a nearly flawless record of 14-1, with his only defeat coming amidst controversy, the division’s elite continues to avoid him. After seeking several notable fights, King David returns to the ring Saturday night against the always-dangerous Robert Wiggins in Yonkers, New York with hopes to impress the boxing world and get the opportunity he truly deserves against the divisions elite. Earlier this week, Darrel Madison talked to 8CN.

8CN:How are you doing Darrel?

Madsion: I can’t complain man.I have made a few changes and just ready to get this ring rust off and get back into the ring

8CN:You have a big fight Saturday night against Robert Wiggins. What do you know about him?

Madsion: I know Wiggins from the early 2000’s when I won the [golden] gloves. We were in the gym together in Rhode Island. I am very familiar with him and his style and I know what I have to do to beat this guy.

8CN:During our last interview, you were just a couple days away from fighting Steve Collins for a regional title, but it ended up falling through. What happened with that fight?

Madsion: Well, they did some funny stuff. They never told me I needed to get blood work done to fight in Texas until 72 hours before the fight, which is when it needed to be turned in. They knew we couldn’t get it on time and they already had another opponent picked out. I think they just put my name on the flyer to sell tickets for a big fight, but they never had any interest in using me.

8CN:In your last fight in July, you beat Nagy Aguilera for the New York State title. Nagy has since scored an upset over Oleg Maskaev and is fighting Sam Peter Friday night in a heavyweight title eliminator. Do you feel that you are being overlooked for bigger fights in the heavyweight division?

Madsion: I think they picked Nagy Aguilera because it would be the easier route for the title shot. Oleg picked Nagy for the fight because they thought it would be an easier fight than me. The only way they would fight me is if I went to Russia. But Nagy got him good and Oleg tried to take the easy route and it backfired. The big fights keep ducking me. I tried to get a shot with Odlanier Solis but they turned me down. This fight was offered to a few other fighters and they turned it down too.

8CN:What are your plans for the rest of 2010?

Madsion: There is talks of a fight maybe in April or May. I might have to pack my bags and go to Europe this summer and do what I have to do there. I am hoping to get three or four fights this year. I know in 2009 we only had two and that was disappointing.

8CN:There are some meaningful fights coming up in the heavyweight division and want your opinion on them. First off, what are your thoughts on Nagy Aguilera vs. Sam Peter?

Madsion: I heard Nagy has looked good in camp from a few people, but it depends on what Sam Peter shows up. Peter has been in with a lot of good heavyweights and is a former champ, but is it the same Peter that fought Eddie Chambers or the other one we know. Nagy is trying to become one of the new heavyweights on the scene, so it is an interesting fight.

8CN: Now if Nagy wins the fight, do you think they would give you a rematch?

Madsion: If he is smart he wouldn’t. [laugh] I would love to do it again. I think I would beat him even easier in the rematch. I beat him in his backyard before and it wasn’t as close as the scorecard said.

8CN:The heavyweight king,Wladimir Klitschko will be fighting Eddie Chambers for the title. Who do you like in that fight?

Madsion: Eddie Chambers has to bring something different to the table. He can’t stand in front of Wladimir. He is such a big puncher and has a big reach advantage. If Eddie applies the pressure, and takes some risk he can cause some problems and pull of the upset but I just don’t know if he can do that. I have to lean with Wladimir. He is just too big and too strong.

8CN: Former Cruiserweight champ David Haye is fighting former champion John Ruiz. How do you see that fight going?

Madsion: I know everyone loves watching John Ruiz fight [laugh]. He is a very hugging man.

8CN:In my opinion, the most interesting heavyweight fight out there is between Chris Arreola and Tomasz Adamek. What are your thoughts on that fight?

Madsion: It is going to be a very entertaining fight, but the best fight of the night will be in the crowd between to Mexican vs. Polish fans. They are both have very passionate fans and nationality pride. That crowd is going to be crazy.

Ok..and now the big one, Darrel Madison vs. Robert Wiggins. How do you see that fight playing out?

Madsion: I see a unanimous decision for Darrel Madison. The fight is 8 rounds, but I have been wanting to fight 10 rounders. They keep getting bumped down.

8CN: Any final comments?

Madsion: Stay tuned for bigger and better things. I made some changes to my team and looking forward to moving up.

8CN: I wish you the best champ and thank you for your time.

Madison: Thanks Aaron, I really appreciate it.
