Holyfield categorically denies Tyson fight rumors

March 16th, 2010

8CountNews sat down with the former 4 time heavyweight champion of the world Evander Holyfield.  Rumors recently surfaced that Mike Tyson was going to make a comeback and Holyfield's name was mentioned as a possible opponent.  Evander categorically denies that he has been contacted, and calls the whole thing a "Marketing tool" to get people's interest up.  Evander is scheduled to fight Francois Botha on April 10th, in Las Vegas, Nevada for the vacant WBF heavyweight belt, and still hopes to grab a history making 5th world title in the near future.  Check out what else Holyfield had to say in this exclusive 8CN interview.  Read more on Holyfield over at our friends site on Boxingtalk - http://www.boxingtalk.com/pag/article.php?aid=19508

8CN - Evander tell us about your fight coming up on April 10th.  How's training going?

EH - Everything is going good.  It's great training.

8CN - Obviously you want to grab your 5th heavyweight title.  What does fighting Francois Botha do for you in order to get there?

EH - Well I think it's going to be an interesting fight. He is an aggressive fighter, and he's strong and he takes a good shot.  He is someone that I do not have to run after.  It should be a pretty interesting fight.

8CN - Styles make fights, so you're saying that he will mix it up with you?

EH - Yes, I think that my arms are longer than his.  In order for him to get a shot on me he is going to have to come in.

8CN - How are you feeling champ? You have been around a long time now.  Are you still feeling good?

EH - I feel great.  I feel better than I have in a long time.  It should be a lot of fireworks.

8CN - There was a rumor about a Mike Tyson comeback. Have you been approached by Don King or anyone about fighting Mike Tyson again?

EH - No, not at all.  The thing is, if they mention my name maybe they will get people to think that he is really coming back. What would be the purpose of him coming back other than to get Evander.  If his purpose wasn't to fight me, why would people watch it?  They are using my name as a marketing tool, just to market it. If he wasn't going to fight me, people wouldn't care about him fighting.

8CN - Do you think it's just a rumor, or do you think they are really bringing Tyson back?

EH - Well is he training?

8CN - There are just some reports that he's been losing weight.

EH - Well you can't put things past people.  Have they showed him training?

8CN - I haven't seen him training, but I am like you, I am just trying to find out myself.

EH - Well until he gets that weight off (laughing) it ain't happening.

8CN - (Laughs) I guess time will tell champ.

8CN - Thanks for joining 8CN tonight.

EH - Ok then, thank you.
