Randall “The Knockout King” Bailey lived up to his nickname with a devastating knockout over Jackson Bonsu in Belgium. As a knockout of the year candidate, Bailey moves one step closer to a world title shot. As a former two time Light Welterweight world champion, the fourteen year veteran has had two tremendous performances at the Welterweight division, scoring five knockdowns in just two fights. The Knockout King has put the entire Welterweight division that he is coming to get them. Recently, Randall Bailey talked to 8CN.
8CN: Thanks for joining us champ. How are you doing?
Randall Bailey: I am doing good Aaron, just hanging in there.
8CN: Your fight with Jackson Bonsu is an early candidate for knockout of the year. Did you think the fight would go that easy and what where your thoughts going into that fight?
Randall Bailey: No I really didn’t think it would go that easy, but I had a good game plan going into the fight and work behind my jab and let the punches flow. I found my mark and was able to capitalize on it early on and get him out of there.
8CN:That was also your first fight in your career in Europe. What is the main difference between fighting in the United States and in Belgium?
Randall Bailey: Well the crowd was very hostile in the beginning. I was fighting in his hometown but after the fight was over they embraced me. After they saw what type of guy I was and I didn’t show any hostilities toward them they gave me respect.
8CN:You fought at Light Welterweight your entire career, what is the main difference you see by moving up to the welterweight division?
Randall Bailey: Well I don’t have to struggle making weight anymore. It used to not be a big problem, but the past year or so It was getting harder and harder to make 140 and I was drained when I fought [Juan] Urango. I feel stronger now and feel better at 147.
8CN: There is some very big fights coming up in your division. As the number one contender for the IBF Welterweight title, what are your thoughts on the IBF title fight this weekend between Jan Zaveck and Rodolfo Martinez?
Randall Bailey: Well, it really doesn’t matter to me who wins. I just want to fight the winner
8CN: We also have the Andre Berto vs. Carlos Quintana fight this weekend in South Florida, in your backyard. I know that both of these guys are signed by [Lou] Dibella and so are you. How do you see this fight going?
Randall Bailey: I will be at the Bank Atlantic Center Saturday night for this card and I’m hoping for a great night of boxing. I am focusing on fighting the winner of the Zaveck fight and when I get my title from him this summer, and then hopefully I can unify the titles with a shot against one of these guys. It really doesn’t matter to me who wins. I just want to fight the best in the division and put my name up there with them.
8CN: You are known as the knockout king, out of the all time greats, where would you rank yourself among the top punchers all time?
Randall Bailey: Well I can’t rank myself. I leave that up to the critics and the public. I never really judged my power. It is just a god given talent that he has given me and has helped me through my career.
8CN: What advice would you give up and coming boxers today?
Randall Bailey: If you have a dream, you have to stick to it and stay focused. It takes a lot of hard work but at the end of the day it will be worth it.
8CN: Any last comment for your fans Randall?
Randall Bailey: I just want to thank all the fans that have been supporting me throughout the years. I hope I am doing a good job for you guys and hopefully next time out I will get the title.
8CN: Champ, you have always put on a great show for the fans and have made several highlight reels with your knockouts. I want to wish you the best and thanks for your time.
