Unfortunately this column will have little do to with boxing
While leaving Atlantic City early Sunday morning, after covering the previous nights Sergio Martinez – Kelly Pavlik middleweight championship fight, word got out about Venezuela’s crowd pleasing slugger Edwin Valero allegedly admitted to murdering his wife.
His wife, Jennifer Carolina Viera, was found dead in a hotel room as a result of multiple stab wounds.
The normal human emotions set in. I was disgusted and hoped we’d never see a scumbag like Valero ever in a prizefight again. Now I’m sure he’ll never be in the ring again. This morning he was found dead while in police custody after hanging himself. Valero leaves two children behind who are now without a mother and father.
Tragically, there were signs of Valero’s abusive behavior towards his wife before. Last month there were reports of Valero battering his wife so badly that she ended up in the hospital and then he threatened hospital workers while she was in care. However, Viera told authorities that her injuries that put her in the hospital, broken ribs and a punctured lung, were result of her falling and not because her husband had hit her.
Unfortunately, her story probably wasn’t true. Tragically, she is now dead. He is not dead. Two children will grow up not knowing their parents.
Valero was an animal inside the ring. A character trait we all admire. Unfortunately, he was one outside the ring as well.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline in the United States is 1-800-799-SAFE. Their website is www.ndvh.org. Women out there who are the victims of violence should get help before something really bad happens. No one wants a story like this to be written about them.
