Cotto stops Foreman in 9
June 5th, 2010
Miguel Cotto bounces back nicely with a 9th round knockout over former champ, Yuri Foreman. The fight was being dominated by Cotto for the majority of the rounds. With the win, Cotto grabs the WBA Super welterweight title. Foreman in a truly gutsy performance hurt his knee in the 7th round. Referee Arthur Mercante let Foreman walk off his injury, but he was clearly hurt badly. In the 8th round Foreman's knee locked up again. He continued to fight on, but someone from his corner threw in the towel.
Referee Arthur Mercante did a tremendous job by not stopping the fight. He at the time though that an outside source threw in the towel. Even without knowing who threw it in, the referee did not feel as if the fight should be stopped, so he let it continue. We are still unclear on who threw the towel in. The referee had to clear the entire ring because everyone thought the fight was over. The fight continued on and in the 9th round, Cotto would land a vicious left body shot that would send Foreman to the floor for good. The official time was 42 seconds of round 9.
Vanes Martirosyan (28-0-17KO) Vs. Joe Greene (22-1-14KO)
Vanes Martirosyan (28-0) soundly defeated previously unbeated Joe Greene. It wasn't exactly a barn burner of a fight, but Vanes did what he had to do to get the victory. Vanes used his jab, and straight right hand to create the proper distance that he needed to be effective. Greene had a few moments in the fight, but not nearly enough. Martirosyan cruises to a clear cut unanimous decision. Official scores 96/93 96/93 and 98/91. The victory enables Vanes to retain his NABF title.
