Tampa Fight Night Recap
July 18th, 2010
One Punch Productions presented an exciting night of boxing at the Westshore Doubletree Hotel in Tampa, FL Friday night. In the main event of the evening, Dillet Frederick shocked previously unbeaten Raymond Charles by scoring a third round TKO. From the start of the fight, both men exchanged several hard blows. It seemed as if Charles was getting the better of Frederick until a huge right hook sent Charles to the canvas late in the opening round.
As the second round opened, Charles never seemed fully stabilized, yet he continued to trade and stand toe to toe with Frederick, much to the delight of the crowd. Frederick overpowered Charles and dropped him again in both rounds two and round three before the fight was stopped at 1:25 of round three. With the win, Frederick moves to 7-3-3, while Charles falls to 12-1-2. After the fight, Nate Campbell, who manages Raymond Charles and has sparred with Dillet Frederick said, “ I knew this was going to be a very tough fight for Ray. Dillet has tons of heart and I have gone several rounds with him before in the gym. This kid has ton of heart and is much better than his record. Ray will be back though. Every fighter has there nights.”
In the co main event, local favorite Adam Jaco stopped overmatched Robbie Tovar via 2nd round KO. Jaco, who was in physically better shape than his opponent was, used his reach and stayed behind his jab. Tovar tried to bully Jaco, but to no avail, ended up on the canvas. After getting up, the out of shape Tovar took a few more punches before collapsing to the canvas. The referee waived the bout off, with no count given at 1:58 of round two. With the win, Jaco moves to 8-3-1 in his career.
In the opening fight of the night, undefeated Tampa prospect Rey Cepeda scored a first round knockout against Puerto Rican Pablo Ruiz. Cepeda dropped Ruiz three times in the opening round before the bout was halted. With the win, Cepeda moves to 4-0 with 3 first round knockouts.
“Silky” Wilky Campfort and Danny Pastrana battled toe to toe for four rounds. The two fighters had contrasting styles, with Campfort using his speed and boxing versus the bigger and stronger brawling Pastrana. In the end Campfort was awarded the split decision 39-37,39-37,37-39. With the win, Campfort moves to 3-1 in his young career.
Pro debutant Antton Slaughter, led by manager Nate Campbell, looked very sharp in stopping Puerto Rican Leroy Padilla early in the first round. Slaughter came out quick landing sharp, crisp punches, highlighted by a stunning hook to the body. Look for bright things from this young man, who has a very proud mother and team with him.
It didn’t take Marquis Davis long to ruin the pro debut of Cesar Gomez. Davis used his size and power to outgun Gomez, who was dropped three times in the opening round before the bout was stopped. The 21 year old Tampa native moves to 2-0 in his career, both wins coming by knockout.
In the only female bout on the card, local favorite Christina Swanson made her fellow fire fighters proud by beating Karen Dulin, who failed to come out for the 4th and final round. With the win Swanson moves to 2-0.
Notables in attendance included All Star baseball player Gary Sheffield, hall of fame boxing trainer Angelo Dundee, former cruiserweight world champion Orlin Norris and several rising boxing stars such as Nick Iannuzzi, Marcus Willis, and Robert Turner.
The next card in One Punch Production’s Ballroom Brawl series is tentatively scheduled for September 17th. Check onepunch.net for more info.
