Secrets, lies, and hyped up headlines littered Mayweather Pacquiao buildup
July 29th, 2010
Oh what a ride it's been. The Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao saga has dominated the boxing headlines for some months now. From boxing websites, to the covers of national magazines, Pacquiao and Mayweather was the main topic. The boxing community all prayed that this fight would happen, but the boxing God's have other plans, at least for now anyway.
When Bob Arum imposed his deadline on Floyd Mayweather the entire boxing world waited to see what was going to happen. Leading up to the deadline there were boxing headlines all over the place hyping up the fight. Examiner writers went crazy writing about it, boxing sites went crazy, magazines, everyone. There was even one boxing site that rolled the dice and headlined that the fight was a "done deal, just waiting on signatures on the finalized contract." I'm still not sure what that even means. One would think that nothing is a done deal until the contracts are signed, no? That headline was probably the most comical, and thankfully not many people read that source. It was a nice try though, they hoped that the fight would actually get signed and it would look like they actually had sources. Well it didn't happen like that, and as a consequence they look foolish and rightfully so.
HBO and Arum say negotiations took place, and the Mayweather side of the street says that they did not. At this point? Who cares? It's a damn shame that the sport of boxing has to be littered with liars, snakes, cheaters, and hypocrites.
Every day the headlines on most of the boxing sites were all about Pacquiao and Mayweather. Pacland, the powerhouse boxing forum ran by 8CN friend Dong Secuya was inundated with Pacquiao Vs. Mayweather articles. This has been the case for months now.
So the deadline has come and gone, not a word from Mayweather, and Arum swings his radar south to Mexico and Antonio Margarito. This is just for now, but in 2011 you can take it to the bank, Mayweather will resurface, and we will do this all over again. There is no doubt that the public wants to see the two best fighters today get into the boxing ring and fight. Pacquiao fans want Mayweather's head on a platter, and Mayweather fans want to shut up millions of Pacquiao fans. It's the perfect storm, good Vs. Bad, and the two top fighters alive going at it.
We will see what the future brings. Pacquiao will fight on November 13th, and then he will go back to being a Congressman. Mayweather will look at his options, and hopefully he will realize that the world wants him to fight Pacquiao, and his legacy needs him to fight Pacquiao.
