RI fight results: Biosse Topples King
September 3rd, 2010
For fight fans who braved Hurricane Earl and made their way to the Twin River Event’s Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island, they were treated to an entertaining 8 round super middleweight main event where former University of Rhode Island football standout Vladine Biosse (8-0, 4 KO’s) passed his stiffest professional test yet with a unanimous decision win over West Palm Beach, Florida’s Ibahiem King (7-5, 2 KO’s).
The first three rounds were fought on mostly even terms. In the 4th round, Biosse cornered King and launched a flurry of wide punches; all of Which King was able dodge. King landed a left hand in the flurry that sent Biosse to a knee for an official knockdown.
“It turned out to actually be a good thing”, Biosse said about the knockdown, “I had him hurt and went wild trying to finish him and he caught me. It made me realize I have to work my way into finishing someone rather than trying to all crazy just fighting.”
In the 6th round, Biosse opened up the frame with a flurry that sent King to the canvas. King got up, but was knocked down again later in the round with a left hand.
“He’s no bum.” Biosse said, “He’s a sharp fighter and tonight he taught me a lot.”
Biosse’s dominance in the 6th carried into the 7th, however no knockdowns were scored. In the final round, Biosse was clearly the fresher of the two fighters.
“I have a good team and we’ll decide what’s next. They’re going to put me in against guys who are not above my head and the right level of competition so I keep learning. I’d rather learn now than later when bigger things come my way.”
Official scores were 77-73 (twice) and 77-72 for Biosse. 8countnews.com scored the fight in favor of Biosse 76-74.
Undercard Results
In a regional battle of super middleweights, Woonsocket, Rhode Island’s Joe Gardner (6-1-1, 1 KO) pounded out a 6 round unanimous decision over New Bedford, Massachusetts’s Eric Pinarreta (2-5, 2 KO’s). Official scores were 60-54 and 59-55 (twice) for Gardner.
Eric Estrada (2-0, 2 KO’s), younger brother of former US Olympian Jason Estrada, scored a 1st round TKO over Washington D.C.’s Tauheed Wheeler (0-2). Estrada, a natural cruiserweight who weighed in at 198 pounds, cornered Wheeler and consistently worked away at his covered up opponent until referee Joey Lupino stepped in to call a halt to the bout at 2:40 of the opening frame. Wheeler, who weighed in at 213 pounds, seemed to use all of his energy for a quick burst of offense early in the fight where he charged right towards Estrada. However, once fatigue set in, the much better conditioned Estrada was able to throw wide punches at the cornered Wheeler without seeing any return fire.
In one of two fights between two New Englanders, Fall River, Massachusetts’ Dustin Reinhold (3-1, 2 KO’s), 34 years old, earned a unanimous decision over the pro debuting Rameil Shelton (0-1), an 18 year old High school student from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Both fighters landed clean shots on each other throughout the 4 rounder, but Reinhold’s appeared to land harder and have more impact on the young Shelton. Official scores were 40-36 and 39-37 (twice) all for Reinhold. 8countnews.com scored the fight for Reinhold 39-37.
In a heavyweight bout, former New England Golden Gloves champion Jesse Barboza (4-1, 3 KO’s) got back in the win column with a 4 round unanimous decision over South Carolina’s Antonio Robertson (0-2). Official scores were 40-36 (twice) and 39-37. 8countnews.com scored the fight even 39-37 for Barboza.
In the opening fight of the evening, New Bedford’s Jonathan Vasquez (2-0, 2 KO’s) made quick work of late replacement Shawn Pyles (0-2) of Danville, Virginia in a junior welterweight bout. Vazquez knocked Pyles down twice in the fight and ended things with a left hook that caught Pyles perfectly and left him sprawled out on the canvas. Official time of the TKO was 1:27 of the 1st round.
