Drug charges against former boxing heavyweight champion Tommy “The Duke” Morrison were dropped this week in Sedgwick County, Kansas.
The charges stemmed from a March 2010 arrest where Morrison was found to have a pipe containing marihuana residue in his vehicle as it was parked outside of a fitness club. As a result, he was later charged with possession of marihuana with a prior conviction and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The 43 year old Morrison was arrested on a warrant for the charges in August of 2011 and would spend 23 days in jail until bail was posted.
The reasoning for the dismissal of charges was not disclosed and this is the second time in the past year that the former champ has seen charges disappear- unrelated drug charges were dropped in Emporia, Kansas in 2011 after the police officer involved in the arrest died in a tragic motorcycle accident and the District Attorney’s office chose to not proceed without their witness.
Morrison, who rose to fame with an appearance in Rocky V, and by beating George Forman for the WBO title in 1993 also holds notable victories over Razor Ruddock, Joe Hipp, Carl Williams, Art Tucker, and Jerry Halstead in a career that saw him forge a record of 48-3-1 with 42 KO’s.
