On the contrary to writing a column with additional ponderings at the bottom, this edition of Pete’s Ponderings will just be a collection of assorted thought’s I have on the fight world.
- If Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. do ever fight, which I hope they do, the negotiations will be agonizing for everyone involved. Neither fighter seems that easy to deal with when it comes to money and revenue splits. The fight before the fight will be a story in itself.
- I hear a lot of people talk about how “Sugar” Shane Mosley has no one to fight, despite being considered the welterweight champion by many. I disagree.
While it would certainly be more financially beneficial for him to fight Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather next, those fights seem unlikely to happen this year. In the meantime, why not fight Andre Berto?
Berto has a belt, as does Mosley, so it would be a unification bout adding much sizzle to the fight and Berto, while standing a fairly good chance to win, is beatable for Mosley. Why not make that fight happen?
- Why don’t the cruiserweights get any love?
After the classic slugfest waged by Tomasz Adamek and Steve Cunningham last year in their championship fight I’ve wanted to see more of both fighters. However, it hasn’t quite been that way.
Adamek has fought once since, defending his title on Showtime against Jonathan Banks, a fight he ended via KO. Since that win it was rumored he would next defend against former middleweight and light heavyweight champ Bernard Hopkins in a potentially historic cruiserweight clash on HBO in July. However, Hopkins wanted far too much money for the fight to happen.
Then it was heavily discussed that Adamek would defend against contender Matt Godfrey July 10th on Showtime. However, Showtime backed out and now it appears he’ll be fighting club fighter Bobby Gunn on that date in a fight that possibly could wind up without U.S. TV coverage.
Cunningham on the other hand hasn’t fought since losing to Adamek. He’s heavily campaigned for a rematch, even starting a website - www.wewantarematch.com – petitioning fans for the fight to happen again.
The good news is that fight should happen again, assuming Cunningham wins his next fight against Wayne Braithwaite.
