Maureen Shea weighs in on Pacquiao vs Cotto fightNovember 15th, 2009

It was an incredible display of speed, and angles. Pacman used every bit of the 145lbs that he carried when delivering each punch. His athletic ability and the way he knows his body and strengths and how to use them is so inspiring for me! In Cotto's defense he had NO corner! That man with a heart of steel trained and coached himself for this fight. He has an incredible jab when he uses it to set up his combination's. He did indeed bring this problem on himself by having an inexperienced corner, but to go into a fight KNOWING you are 100% ALONE takes guts and faith in yourself, and belief that you did the best you could do for yourself even if you are wrong.
COTTO LEARNED A LESSON: A corner is VITAL when you need them!! Cotto didn't think he was going to need them last night. All he knew was he had 3 warm body's in the corner to wipe his face and give him water. You ALWAYS need eyes outside what you can see in front of you, and that's your corner's job. You have to trust them to tell you what they see and YOU need to make the adjustments, but if they aren't telling you anything you are blind. If you don't believe or trust in your corner you are all alone!! And that's what Cotto was last night. I also feel that the fight should have been stopped in the 9th round, but it seemed to be a power struggle in the corner, which makes perfect sense. If Cotto was running the camp HE was running the corner, BUT PACMAN was RUNNING THE FIGHT!!
In closing I would like to say I respect Miguel Cotto very much for his valiant efforts! Paquiao is one of my favorite fighters. He is a complete fighter. He is complete not just physically but emotionally and spiritually . I admire and respect his work ethic, spirituality, love for country, loyalty to family, and friends and the joy in the smile he brings to the ring!
