Juan "Baby Bull" DiazJanuary 27th, 2010
Former undisputed lightweight world champion, Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz wants everyone to know one thing. Juan wants everyone to know that if they think that his best days are behind him, then they have another thing coming. Diaz is chomping at the bit to get back into the ring to show the world that he's not even close to being a washed up fighter. The former world champion recently joined 8CountNews and gave us an update on what's been going on with him as of late. Diaz came up short in his rematch fight against Paulie Malignaggi, and hoped to be able to get back to his winning ways in the near future. Check out what the "Baby Bull" had to say in this exclusive 8CountNews interview.
8CN - Juan thanks for joining us tonight.
JD - Thank you for having me.
8CN - What's been going on since your last effort against Malignaggi?
JD - My year has started slow but good. I have been in the gym, I took some time off after my last fight. It's been slow so far, as far as boxing goes. I talked to my manager and asked him if there is a possibility that I will be fighting anytime soon? He told me that he is talking to Golden Boy, and we are just waiting to get the best possible fight out there for me.
8CN - Will you be possibly taking a tune up fight so that you can knock off some rust?
JD - That's exactly what we have been thinking about doing. I need a tune up just to hit my groove again, and to get back into the winning ways once again. We have to see what our options are this year.
8CN - I thought you lost the rematch fight against Malignaggi fair and square. What do you think happened in that fight? Do you think it was just that Paulie's style was tough for you?
JD - Yes, I thought I lost the rematch fair and square. I think that I had a bad strategy going in. I thought that I could go in there and out-box him, but that wasn't the case. I should have put more pressure on him.
8CN - What was the biggest lesson that you learned from the loss against Malignaggi?
JD - I have to go in there and do what I do best, and that is to put a lot of pressure on fighters. I don't need to be trying to out-box people, that's not who I am. I need to throw punches in bunches, and wear down my opponents.
8CN - Some people are saying that you are a shot fighter. What do you say to those people that say that your best days are behind you?
JD - Well I hope that they keep on saying that because that's what motivates me. When people doubt me and believe that I can't do it, that's when I do my best. Many years ago there were people that doubted me and said that I would never become a world champion. Well I have done it 4 times now, more than many people have. I am a guy that they said would never make it, and I did. I think 2010 wil bel the year when I will prove all of them wrong once again.
8CN - What's the most proudest moment of your career for you so far?
JD - Becoming the second youngest world champion in history behind Mike Tyson. I proved everyone wrong that didn't believe in me. Out of all of the 2000 Olympic fighters, even though I didn't go to the Olympics, I became a champion before all of them. At 20 years old I became a world champion, and I am very proud of that.
8CN - What does Mr Willie Savannah mean to you?
JD - Willie is like a father to me. He has always guided me in the right direction. We don't even have a written contract, we just have a respectable relationship. We have a father and son relationship. I trust this man with my life, and he can trust me as well. I know we have a father and son relationship, and we speak on a daily basis, and we understand what we want from each other.
8CN - When realistically do you think you will fight again?
JD - I hope that I can fight in a few months, sometime in May or June. Usually by this time I would have heard something by now if it would have been in March or April. Since I have not heard anything yet, it looks like it will be in May or June.
8CN- Juan thanks for joining us here on 8CountNews. You're a class act, and I wish you all of the best in your life and your boxing career.
JD - Thanks, and I want to thank all of my fans around the world. People come up to me in the stores in Houston and they always support me. I want to tell all of them that the "Baby Bull" is not done! I have a lot of great fights left in me, and I will become a world champion again in 2010!
