The Eagle Has Well And Truly Landed

January 25th, 2010
Rooneys Boxing Gym

Last Friday, at the Brentwood Centre in Brentwood, Essex, rising Super Middleweight star Erick 'The Eagle' Ochieng decisively stopped Plymouth's Jon Harrison in the second round. The resounding way that Ochieng dealt with his vastly more experienced opponent was testament to the faith that promoter Frank Maloney and trainer Brian Lawrence have in this exceptionally talented 22 year old from Stoke Newington.

Harrison tried all that he could to stop the stylish Ochieng from utilising his fight plan. Ochieng was patient though,  constantly working away on Harrison's body until the opportunity arose to finish him off with the most vicious left hook in the second round.

On Monday morning Ochieng was straight back in training at Rooney's Boxing Gym , in Southwark, South London, to prepare for his next fight, which hopefully may be as soon as February.

Following his workout session at the gym 'The Eagle' sat and spoke about the fight.  "First of all I want to thank God for the victory. It was good fight, you know it was only the second round when I stopped him.

He kept on holding, but in the second round I caught him with a left hook, it was a quick left hook and he went down for the count and couldn’t beat the count.

I'm hoping to have my next fight very soon. Matchroom sports are having a show at York Hall on the 12th February. We have to wait for confirmation but I'm really hoping we get it.

It's all good I'm already back in the gym today (Monday) and training is going really well. I feel good and I'm in good shape. I'm ready, I’m ready for the fight if we get it. I’ll stay fit and on top of my game."

Ochieng then went on to talk about fellow Rooney's Boxing Gym mates Ian 'Dappa' Napa, who controversially lost his British Bantamweight crown to Jamie McDonnell, and Ben Murphy who beat Lee 'Cooky' Cook to take the BBBofC Southern Area Lightweight title. "Ian Napa is unbelievable, such a great fighter. Ian won that fight. He fought great and clearly controlled the fight, yet two of the judges saw it different. Hopefully he will still get to fight for the European title in March.

I was also ringside when Ben fought. He was strong and the fight was good. He pressured him and threw lots of body shots. Ben won that fight fairly and squarely."

If all goes well Erick 'The Eagle' Ochieng's growing legion of fans will indeed get to see him in action again next month, at the Matchroom Sports promoted event at York Hall in Bethnal Green on the 12th February, If so he will be on the undercard of the exceptional triple title spectacular featuring  the BBBofC British Lightweight battle between Lenny Daws and Jason Cook, the vacant EBU-EU Middleweight fight between Grzegorz Proksa and Affif Belghecham and the vacant BBBofC English Light Welterweight showdown between Michael Grant and Steve Williams.
